I met the then LTC Hazel Johnson when we were both assigned to the Office of the Surgeon General. She was someone who set and maintained high standards. At the same time she was kind, generous and very helpful. Our paths crossed a few times after we both went on to different assignments and she later became General Hazel Johnson-Brown, Chief of the Army Nurse Corp. I was Hazel Johnson's Adjutant at the very beginning of her term as the Dean Of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing. She was unique, in that she was able to focus on leadership, academics and patient care - all at the same time - and do all with the highest of standards. I have not had contact with her since I departed Walter Reed but am very sadddend to learn of her passing. She was a great lady and will be missed.

So sorry for your loss. I served with Hazel at Walter Reed, the Army Surgeon General's Office and in Korea. It was a pleasure to have known and work with her and call her my friend. We have lost an outstanding American.

As young Army nurses in the late 1960's, we met then Major Johnson when she was course director for the basic OR nurses program at Letterman. She set high standards and expected us to meet them, yet gave us her encouragement and friendship. We saw her later in her career and she remained a friend and a woman we admired very much. She will be missed.
