Hazel Young Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 4, 2014.
Hazel S. Young, 102, passed away on Sunday March 2, 2014. Mrs. Young was born on May 31, 1911 in Gulfport, Mississippi to the late Albert and Viola Shaw. Mrs. Young graduated from Sellers High School class of 1929. She was a member of Cranes Creek Baptist Church. Her father Albert Shaw and her mother Viola were school teachers as well as owners and operators of the only store in the county. They were very successful merchant farmers in the community. Her passion for nursing came about due to the guidance of her family along with the passing of her younger brother Evan due to polio. The love and devotion she had to help others made her a leader in the eyes of her classmates as well as others in the community. She continued with her desire of helping others through nursing as well as assisting in other projects such as WPA (work project administration) which was implemented in 1939 due to the great depression. One of her greatest accomplishments was having her daughter Betty J. Benner with her husband of nineteen years Curtis Extine. After the passing of Mr. Extine Mrs. Young remarried Ewin Young and they were married for twenty years. Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Viola Shaw and her brothers and Evan and Leroy. She is survived by her daughter Betty Benner who had been her caregiver for many years as well as five generations consisting of four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and four great- great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Friday March 7, 2014 at 11:30am at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Condolences may be offered at www.woodlawnfuneralhomegotha.com

So grateful we were able to visit you both last year, Betty--what a remarkable woman! You took such good care of her and I know you will miss her greatly. Much love from the Dillahunty (Young) family.

There will definitely be many memories of Aunt Hazel by her Shaw family because she always remembered us. Last time she talked to me (only weeks ago) she asked "when are you coming?" Now, we will have that reunion in Heaven! Betty, you have been the best daughter. She couldn't have had one any better. love you all.

My memories go all the way back to the
time Betty and I were about a year and
a half or maybe 2 years old. We were
fighting over a stroller. Even have
pictures. Betty & I have remained
friends all these years. I have
wonderful memories of Aunt Hazel even
though she wasn't a blood relative. She
treated me like a niece. I remember
the many times we went to the Shaws in
the country. Oh, what wonderful times.
Aunt Hazel gave me a lot of good advice
when I was a teenager. We'd been apart
many years, but I continued to keep up
with her over the years through Betty
I loved her very much.

Some of my earliest memories are of Aunt Hazel coming to visit her Mississippi relatives, which she did regularly for as long as she was able. When she didn't come in person, she would send packages of Florida citrus or gifts for everyone in the family, particularly at Christmas. She was so excited when construction started on Walt Disney World, looking forward to visitors from “back home.” Aunt Hazel responded to each and every letter I wrote her for decades, starting with printed notes from a 6-year-old right up to my telling her all about my son, her great-nephew. There's definitely something missing from my life now, but she left so many memories behind that she'll never be forgotten.

Aunt Hazel was so lovely, caring, and sweet and it showed in her smile. She lived a long life and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with the family. Love, Lisa & Carlos Velez
