Yesterday I learned about the passing of Pastor Henry Engeling...he was the pastor of the church that I grew up in Asecension Lutheran in Austin, Texas. He was never one to throw thunderbolts from the pulpit, shout down and wave around. He was what I call a quiet steady through type of pastor. One that was always there to answer a question from a curious child, one to laugh out loud at the antics of his confirmands but also demand from us some actual thought to be put into faith - our faith. Not what we mimic from our parents but actual faith from our hearts and our minds. He encouraged us to read, grow, learn and serve. I don't know if he thought our confirmation class was special...I always hoped that he would look back at all of us, to see what we have become and be proud to know that he played a part in making us stronger and more thoughtful. From him I learned how to serve with a joyful heart. That it is better to give than to receive and that humor in it's many forms is a wonderful thing. As I was thinking about him and his passing...I learned he was in pain and struggling to breathe..I know in my heart the moment he felt God's arms surrounding him...welcoming him and telling him..."Well done Henry...well done" he was at peace.

Loretta & Family -- I was saddened to learn of the death of your loved one, Pastor Henry, who was also loved by many others. I have good memories of the years that you and Pastor Henry served at Trinity, Hempstead. You both were very special to our congregation. May he rest in peace!
I lost my mate, Bill, in May 2008, so I know the emptiness you will feel. I now live in Georgetown,TX. to be near a niece.
GOD be with you all.
Your friend in Christ,

I sure loved Pastor Engeling! His family was my family from the moment we went to his church! I loved having him as my Confirmation teacher. And he taught me what to look for in a Pastor and a church. I love his wife and his kids. Kay was my first babysitter and big sister all in one! I loved being part of the family and I wish I could be there to celebrate what an amazing man he was!!

I'm truly sad to learn of Henry's passing. He and Loretta were always a joy to visit with. My mother was so close to them, as Loretta was one of her favorite cousins. In Mom's later years, Jimmy and used to take her to see Loretta and Henry in New Braunfels. We all enjoyed the visits! I know Henry has touched so many lives and he will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to the family... MY family!
