Henry Ring Obituary

RING, HENRY GORDON, a long-time resident of the Miami area, passed away peacefully at home in Pinecrest on Saturday, May 27. He was 89. Hank was born in Burlington, VT and was raised there and in Springfield, MA. After serving in the Army during WWII, he attended Yale University and earned a medical degree from Harvard University in 1953. In the same year, he married Bernice Fieldman, a gifted pianist also from Springfield. They moved to South Florida in 1963, where Hank established his ophthalmology practice and joined the faculty at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. As a skilled and compassionate physician he gave many patients the gift of preserved or restored vision and contributed to his profession through teaching and research. After retirement Hank enjoyed photography, tennis, travel, and visiting with family and friends. He loved going to concerts and learning to play the cello. During Hank's final years the loving care of Helen Strickland and Brittany Brookins helped him be able to stay at home and keep enjoying life. Hank was a loving husband and father, and a generous soul with a kind word for everyone who crossed his path. He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Bernice Ring, and is survived by his children Wendy, Jonathan and David Ring; his grandchildren Benjamin, Julian and Joshua Ring; his brother-in-law Peter Schuntermann, and nephews Eric and Howard Schuntermann. Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, June 1 at Temple Judea, 5500 Granada Blvd., Coral Gables followed by internment at Mt. Nebo Kendall Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm at Hank's home in Pinecrest.

I practiced ophthalmology in Miami for 21 years. I consulted with Henry many times.
We were going thru my daughter's infant clothing, she is now 40, and came across a beautiful outfit the Rings gave us and it brought back fond memories. I had not know that Henry had died so I can now add my belated condolences to the family. An era of great ophthalmologists in now over.

I delivered Hank's mail during the time he lived in his condo in Pinecrest where I got to know him very well. He always had a smile on his face and it was always a pleasure to see him and speak a few words. I was on vacation at the time of his passing and only found out about it today, June 7. My condolences to the family. Wishing you many blessings.

Dear David, Wendy, and Jon: Our sincere sympathy to you and your families. As you know, we have been friends of your parents for many years and have had lots of great times together. Hank has spent many Passover and Thanksgiving holidays with us and we will miss him. Sorry we can't be at the service as we will be out of town. We will be thinking of you.
