On April 20, 2020 Hugh MacGillis of West Hartford travelled on from his wonderful, quirky, earthly life filled with his quick wit and unfailing love and acceptance of those he met along the way. Hugh was well known and respected as a social worker at the Village for Families and Children and June...

Not sure what to say?

Thinking of Hugh today. He was my friend and will be missed forever. RIP my friend.

"A loving gentle soul", I was a shy, lonely child next door (Sedgwick) who would sneak over to pet Hughes Husky dog. Hugh would come out through the garage with a basketball (heard someone with the dog) and gently approach with a warm smile and greeting. He would land a few baskets and make small talk. As a shy, quiet child I found peace in his company though he towered the skies from my little eyes. Hugh, you were a light in a little girls gray world. I have grown, and carry that warmth,...

I met Hugh (and Ann) at Uconn when we were in the same dorm. Through college and for several years there after we maintained a close relationship that has lapsed over the past forty years.

I found that unlike most of us freshmen Hugh already had a strong social consciousness as well as a wry sense of humor. I recall that he was involved with SNCC and the "folk song crowd" which in the sixties was the campus radical left...he liked to hint that the FBI had a dossier on him. I'm sure...

We were saddened by the news of Hugh's death. He was a very unique, warm, caring man with a special sense of humor. Although we left Connecticut in the early 70s, the memories of time spent with Hugh have remained fresh in our minds.
Our sincere condolences to Susan, Rachel, Peter, Daniel, and Bobbi.

I was so sorry to hear of Hugh's death. His was such a wonderfully engaging personality I always enjoyed talking with him. I had meant to tell him that I still had a poem he shared with me back in the 1960s and I had it read at my father's funeral in 2016. It is Elegy for Robinson by Winfield Townly Scott. If you would like a copy, please let me know. Blessings on you all.

Condolences to the family. To know that he lived with Parkinson's all these years is a testament to his courage and strength. I'll always remember Hugh as a kind and compassionate man who truly cared about children. Many DCF staff who interacted with him at the Village knew him to be a wonderful person. RIP.

Sending my condolences to the "Mac" family. Hugh was a great friend and room mate in Bloomfield back in the 70s. I'll always remember the cross country camping trip we went on in the red chevy station wagon. What a hoot! He convinced me to play Santa for the children at Child and Family services. Gifts would be collected at Connecticut General and I'd load them in my van and distribute them to the kids on a yearly basis. What fun we had!

Of course who can forget Sundays at the...

It was with deep sorrow that I read of
Hughie's passing. I send my condolences and
prayers to the whole MacGillis clan. He was
a shining star in a very bright family and
will be sorely missed.
