Hugh McKANE Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

McKANE, Hugh HUGH TIMOTHY MCKANE A resident of Historic Brookhaven of 30 years passed away on May 25th from complications of Type I diabetes. He was born on July 13, 1946, to parents, Hugh and Rita McKane. Tim attended Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School and graduated from Marist School in 1965, The University of Georgia in 1969, and received his Master's degree from Georgia State University in 1976. Tim served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Infantry attending Records School at Fort Carson, CO and completing Jungle School in the Panama Canal Zone. In the Vietnam War, he served as Base Defense Coordinator in Quang Tri City and was a platoon leader in Operation Lam Son 719 involving the recapture of Khe Sanh and the Laos invasion. Medically retired as a First Lieutenant, Tim was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received at Con Thien, called the "Hill of Angels" by local missionaries due to the massive amount of casualties occasioned there. Forty-five of the sixty soldiers in the fight were killed. While Tim spent months recovering in an Army hospital and the injuries sustained impacted Tim throughout his life, they never slowed his quest to enjoy life to the fullest, always cherishing old friendships and making new ones along the way. Following the war, Tim became a teacher and coach at The Westminster Schools and at Woodward Academy, teaching English and coaching football and basketball. He later worked at the 3M Company and then served as a Financial Advisor for the last thirty years, working for UBS (formerly PaineWebber/Kidder Peabody), and most recently with Morgan Keegan/Raymond James as Senior Vice President. Tim served as a board member of the Georgia Securities Association was a past president of the Retail Securities Brokers of Georgia. Over the years, Tim has served on the Board of Directors at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home and the Board of Visitors of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. Tim was particularly fond of Marist School where he served on the Alumni Board, and was a class delegate and former President of the Marist Alumni Council. He received the Father James Hartnett Distinguished Alumni Service Award and was most proud of the honor given his admiration for, and close friendship with, Fr. Hartnett, Fr. Brogley and all of the Members of the Society of Mary who positively influenced his life. He also enjoyed his time as a life member of the Capital City Club. Tim is predeceased by his beloved wife of 30 years, Marie Sheahan McKane. He is survived by his loving son Kevin Patrick McKane of Nashville, TN, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Meg McKane, sister, Mary Daniell and brother-in-law John Daniell, and sister Susan Fritts and several nieces and nephews. The family requests that donations be given to the Marist School, in memory of Tim McKane, for the Tuition Assistance Program. A funeral mass will be celebrated, Saturday, June 1st at eleven thirty at the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church, Father Joel Konzen celebrant. Interment Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends, Friday, May 31st from five to seven o'clock with a Rosary at seven at H.M. Tim,

You were a great boss at Kidder Peabody and I always looked up to you. Kevin was just a little boy when you and Marie graciously included me for Thanksgiving dinner, one year, since my family was in DC. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

It has been many years since I took that wonderful English elective that Mr. McKane taught based on Sherlock Holmes. I still fondly remember the enthusiasm he showed . That was in 1974. He will be missed by more people than he may ever know. God Bless !

Kevin, I visited with Tim about 1 year ago at home. It's not everyday that a boy has a father with the quality of character as did yours. Your mother was no exception. They were both very special and blessed. Hold your head high in the pride of who you are and where you came from. I'm sorry for your loss.

My condolences to the family. Tim was my financial adviser ever since I left Snapper in 1996 and I thought the world of him. He was always very personable and you could always count on him to take time to talk to you, even for simple questions. I thought a lot of Tim and considered him a good friend. He will be missed.

Tim was one of the great joys to work with. I was privileged to be associated with him. We were part of many happy times together at UBS conferences, meetings and dinners. His dedication to his clients and friends was unfailing. He was a true professional in the best and most emphatic sense. He will be missed but lives on as an example to us all.

Timmie was a life long friend and mentor even though he was 3 years older than I was. I went to the same schools as he did and he was just a great guy and a friend to everyone. He was like my big brother and Marie became my big sister. He was always glad to see me, always smiling and laughing. Just a happy guy who will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know him.

Kevin, Meg, Mary and Susan, please know that our hearts are with you; what a terrible and unexpected loss. Tim was a wonderful father and uncle. Although I only met him at Starr's wedding, I felt that I knew Tim always because my husband, Bill, had spoken so highly of Tim and his time both at Marist and in Viet Nam. He was truly an American hero and you can always be proud of what he accomplished in his life.

Mr. McKane (Tim) was my 10th grade English teacher, he taught me alot, and after graduation I learned more about the big heart he had. He was a lover of people, wanted to see younger generations succeed, and was always there to listen. Thanks Mr. McKane for being there, being a friend and caring. You will always be my friend and favorite teacher.

Requiescat in pace.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Tim was one of my favorite teachers at WA. I took a War Lit class with him one quarter. Since there were no girls in the class, he recounted stories from Vietnam. Before prom, he also instructed us in etiquette. I would see him in Buckhead and at The Atlanta Steeplechase and it was always a pleasure to reconnect with him.

Kevin, I last saw your dad at Paul Stockhammer's home, a year or so before Paul died. What a vibrant man who will be missed. Teaching with him at Woodward (and with your mom) was a pleasure. A joyful reunion is taking place; so we cannot mourn here "as those who have no hope."

Tim will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He gave unselfishly and Marist has lost a great friend & supporter.
