J. BIERLEY Obituary

BIERLEY, J. Charles II 53, Charles passed away unexpectedly on September 17, 2024, at home, in his hometown Tampa, FL. Charles was born in and grew up in Tampa. He was surrounded by an extended range of family and friends. He enjoyed beach life, Latin American travel with his parents, and his pony at the family farm in Brooksville. He rode his bike to St. Mary's Episcopal Day School in south Tampa and later attended and graduated from Berkeley Preparatory School also in Tampa. There he focused on French and social sciences. He then attended Tufts University, Ibadan University in Nigeria and New College. Owing to fortunate personal circumstances he then began traveling the world visiting perhaps one hundred countries until he recently encountered severe physical pain problems. He lived in Austin Texas for 15 years where he was much involved with Alliance Francaise and Amnesty International and assisted it with the introduction to the US of many French speaking Africans. In the last decade he traveled and lived in Hawaii and other Pacific islands. Charles is survived by his loving parents, Tifi and Jack Bierley and his Tampa aunt, Tilda Brabson and many other aunts, uncles and cousins in Tampa and throughout the United States. There will be no visitation or funeral service. Donations in Charles's memory can be made to the E.C. Smith Scholarship fund which supports tuition for needing students at Berkeley Preparatory School or to Amnesty International.

I am sorry to hear about Charles's passing. Back at Berkeley, he and I led a religion/philosophy club for a short time. He was always up for an animated discussion about the meaning of life.

We are Alexa Herrington, Nadia McDonald and Abby. We all offer our heartfelt condolences to Charles' family and friends. We met Charles a few times at the French plan gauge Meetup he hosted. We were impressed by his wide-ranging interests, his kind manner and his cosmopolitan outlook on the world. We wish we could have spent more time with him. We miss him.
