Levitt, Jack S.
November 8, 1931 - November 1, 2025
Jack Levitt, age 93, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025. A lifelong champion of St. Louis sports, he made a lasting impact on the St. Louis sports scene as a promoter, organizer, and director of numerous events. Jack was a professional baseball player with the Cleveland Indians organization until his career was cut short by the Korean War, during which he proudly served in the Army.
After retiring from baseball, Jack became an NBA executive with the St. Louis Hawks and later served as an NBA scout for over three decades. His resonant voice became a hallmark of local sports as the public address announcer for the Hawks, Blues and Spirits.
Keeping basketball alive in St. Louis was one of his greatest passions. He brought the Kansas City Kings to the Arena to play several NBA games before sellout crowds, and as founder of the Missouri-Illinois basketball series, he created a rivalry that continues to be a marquee event today.
Besides basketball, Jack was a driving force in the St. Louis tennis community. He brought several men's and women's professional tennis tournaments to St. Louis, showcasing many of the world's greatest tennis players. As co-founder, general manager and sometimes coach of World Team Tennis' St. Louis Aces, he led the team to a World Team Tennis Championship in 1996.
Jack is a proud member of the St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and the St. Louis Tennis Hall of Fame.
While sports were a lifelong passion, Jack's favorite team was always his family. He was the devoted father and father-in-law of Michael Levitt (Lori) and Susie Kopp (Gary); dear grandfather of Mark Levitt (Paige), Jeffrey Levitt (Jordyn), Elizabeth Levitt, Adam Kopp and Annie Kopp; and cherished great-grandfather of Olivia and Reese Levitt. He was the son of the late William and Ida Levitt and brother of the late Robert Levitt (late Carole).
