James Allerdice Obituary

James Kirkpatrick Allerdice

of Carmel, Indiana, died peacefully on Monday, November 9, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara Browning Allerdice, his children, James K. Allerdice, Jr. (Colleen), and Susan Ann "Susi" Osswald (Brian) and stepson W.W. "Wes" Harris III.

James, "Jim" to his friends, "Pops" and "Grandpops" to his loving family, was born on December 12, 1925 to William Horace Allerdice and Laura Kirkpatrick Allerdice. He was a second-generation American. His Grandfather Joseph came to the United States from Scotland in 1851.

Jim grew up on the Northside of Indianapolis. He attended School #70 and until a few months before his passing, had regular get-togethers with his classmates where they enjoyed lunch and fond memories.

Jim attended Shortridge High School where his talent for football quickly became evident. He was proud of their 1941 undefeated season. He was an outstanding All-American Fullback in both High School and College. He earned the nickname of "Modock" for his lumbering gait, dazzling half-spins, and reverses.

Indiana Coach Bo McMillin recruited Jim to come to Indian University to play football for the Hoosiers. He stayed just one semester before volunteering for the Navy. While attending Navy Flight Training, he was sent to Wabash College and was part of the V-12 program. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. After leaving his mark on the Wabash football program, he went to work for Arvin Industries traveling much of the southwest but love landed him in California where he worked for Shell Oil.

He married Jean Stackhouse of Indianapolis on February 16, 1952. They were married for thirty years until her death in August of 1982. While in Indianapolis, Jim became a partner in the A.V. Stackhouse Construction Company and later worked as an insurance salesman and real estate agent. He retired from Sweet & Company in 1990.

On July 9, 1985 Jim married Barbara Browning of Indianapolis. Barbara was a loyal and loving wife to the very end and the only Grandmother that his grandchildren ever knew.

Jim had a great love of family, football, fishing, Lake Wawasee, and reading. His smile brightened every room. It was a blessed life.

Left with wonderful memories are his grandchildren, James K. "Jamey" Allerdice III (Alicia), Stephanie D. Allerdice, Tyler D. Osswald, Conner M. Osswald, W.W. "Wade" Harris IV (Erin), and Alexandra "Ali" Harris.

The Family would like to thank Seasons Hospice, Caregivers Inc., and At Home Preferred, particularly caregivers Jacob, Jazmine, and Donnell, who tended to Jim during his final days.

A Memorial Service will be held at The Gothic Chapel at Crown Hill Cemetery on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at one o'clock in the afternoon. A private graveside service for family and close friends will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Wawasee Area Conservancy, Friends of the Library (Carmel), or the charity of your choice.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Crown Hill Funeral Home.

Just learned of Uncle Jimmy's passing. Without question, he and Aunt Jean were my favorite "dutch" uncle and aunt. I know my parents, Jane and Bob Rice, counted them among their very best friends. To Little Jimmy and Susi, here's a hug, a tear and a prayer.
