Wendel and Loecher Funeral Home - Lancaster Obituary

KAVANAGH - James J.
Of Lancaster, NY, June 26, 2021.
Beloved husband of 53 years to Mary
Young Kavanagh, deceased; dear
father of James (Mary), Suzanne
(Loïc) Kavanagh, Cindy (Ronald)
Barnhardt, Karen (John) Roberts and
Kathleen Kavanagh, deceased; loving
grandfather of Colin, John, Lauren,
Megan, Joseph, Tara, Austin, Sarah,
Daniel and Sean; great-grandfather
of Joshua, Andrew, Owen, Addelyn,
Elijah, Melody and Grace; he is survived
by his close friend Shirley Zurbrick. Jim
was born on May 17, 1929 in Chicago,
Illinois, was an only child just nine years
old when he lost his father, John. His
mother returned with Jim to Lancaster
in 1938 where he would later marry and
have five children with his wife, Mary
Young. He was an important part of the
lives of his children, grandkids, great
grandkids and the local community.
He was the son of John Francis and
Genevieve Dempsey Kavanagh;
grandson of John Kavanagh and Mary
Connoly, who emigrated from Ireland
in 1890 and settled in Chicago. Jim
graduated from Lancaster High School
in 1948 and enrolled at Buffalo State
Teachers College where he earned
a master’s degree in education. He
went on to teach mathematics and
coach high school football, taking
West Seneca to win ECIC Division
1 championship in 1965 and cochampionship
in 1966. He was later
Principal of West Seneca West High
School. He served as a Lieutenant in the
New York Army National Guard 152nd
Engineer Battalion and was elected
a Trustee of the Village of Lancaster.
He was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame
Fighting Irish Football, and enjoyed
his time participating in the Lancaster
Historical Society and Buffalo Civil War
Roundtable. For over 20 years Jim
delivered Meals on Wheels, annually
organized individuals to fundraise for
Children’s Hospital on Buffalo News
Kids Day and was chairperson of the
Lancaster Reunion for high school
classes that graduated over 50 years
ago. Jim was well-read and traveled
widely. From chilly Arctic waters, to
majestic U.S. National Parks, through
Europe and Africa; he could explain the
history of any place when he explored
with his family. Just two weeks before
he passed, Jim dined out at his favorite
restaurant, Frank’s on Broadway in
Lancaster, still driving his friend Shirley
on dates together. With his kids and
great grandkids he had one last
backyard party earlier in June, full of
life. He passed away in his sleep the
evening of Saturday, June 26, 2021
at the age of 92 in his own Lancaster
home that had been in his mother’s
family since the 1890s. He was under
the attention of his children, extended
family and compassionate Hospice
workers. He can now enjoy a well earned
rest, joining his wife Mary and
his daughter Kathleen. A celebration of
life will be organized by his family at a
later date.  Share condolences at www.wendelandloecherinc.com

Not sure what to say?

I remember Mr. Kavanaugh first as my Math teacher in Junior High at West Seneca. He was strict, but he made you want to learn. I was then reacquainted with him as a patient at the doctor's office where I worked. I was fortunate to get to know him as an adult and realized what a kind and gentle man he was. I addressed him as "Mr. Kavanaugh and he said, " You can call me Jim now." I will always remember that. I know that he will be missed by everyone who knew him, and my heart goes out to his...

Deepest condolences on the loss of a caring, loving, generous individual! Mr. Kavanagh has contributed to this world in many beautiful ways! He had a long, rich life. Wonderful to learn that his passing was peaceful and occurred while in slumber in his family's historic Lancaster home. Karen & Kathleen were my classmates at Lancaster High School, we graduated from the class of 1979. Karen & Kathy were both so much fun to have as friends, twins, yet each with their own special...

Jim was a wonderful man, enriching the lives of all who knew him!

Our sympathy to the family. Mr Kavanagh was always smiling and eager to extend his hand to shake your hand. I´m a better person for knowing him. Lancaster and Notre Dame lost a valued member of the community. RIP

To the family of my dear High School Coach, I extend my sincere condolences. Like many others, I am deeply saddened by Coach’s passing. I will always remember what an extraordinary man he was and what an extraordinary life he lived.
In my eyes, Coach Kavanagh is the perfect role model as evidenced by his dedication to family, community and service to country. I see him as a true leader in all circumstances of life. The qualities he displayed as a Coach captured my admiration and...

We are so sorry for the loss of your father. He was a great man, devoted to his family, community, and friends. We will miss his warm welcoming smile, but we know his love and caring will continue through his children and grandchildren. He has left the world a better place because of all he given to it! ❤

To the Kavanagh family, My deepest condolences to your family. My father has fond memories of Jim and all the help he gave especially to my brother Peter. A beautiful family. Sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Jim Kavanagh was a postive influence on so many lives as a teacher, coach, and principal. He encouraged me in the first years of my tenure at West Senior. He called me into his office one day and said we needed a student news paper and wanted to know if I would be the adviser -- and so started years of literacy and leadership education for our students. He was an inspirational leader who was a model leader for setting realistic goals and handling controversy. My wife and I extend our...

Jim was the best cousin and friend we could have. His exemplary life was full of love, friendliness, caring, and concern. What a role model he was for our family. We would visit him anywhere when he went on another adventure whether it was in Vero Beach, Daytona Beach, Key West, Orlando, or back at his home in Lancaster. He was loved by everyone. His greatest legacy is his wonderful family, and our hearts go out to all of them, and we're keeping them all in our prayers. We love and miss you,...
