James McGowan Obituary

MCGOWAN, Colonel James D. Jr., (Ret) of Midlothian was called home to be with Jesus on January 21st, 2024. Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of 22 years, Linda Marcus McGowan, and by his parents, James D. McGowan, Sr., and Mary Ann Files McGowan. He is also preceded by his brother, Robert McGowan, and sister, Jouida Ann Hartman 'Jodi.' Jim is survived by his children: David McGowan of Madison, VA; Jill McGowan Crowder (John) of Charlottesville, VA; Kristy L. Davidson (Eric) of Mansfield, TX; J. Nicole Lawson Bogue of Powhatan, VA; Jay Lawson (Mechelle) of North Chesterfield, VA. He leaves behind grandchildren Michael (Liz), Rachel, Courtney, Natalie, and Anna Crowder; Connor and Brady Davidson; Whitley and Landen Bogue. Additionally, great-grandchildren Jaden Singh and Jack Crowder. He also leaves nieces, nephews, and a host of other family members. To his family, Jim, affectionately known as "Papa," was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He imparted the values of unconditional love and the importance of leading a meaningful life. Jim was a man of integrity and honor. Born on May 7, 1939, in Inglewood, CA, Jim graduated from Arizona State and pursued a remarkable career in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving our country for 24 years and retiring as a Colonel in 1986. During that time, he served in the Vietnam War. Jim was an accomplished runner and while at Morningside High School, he was named the fastest miler in the nation, for a short period of time, with a 4:22 mile. He managed to break his own record and his best time was 4:14! In addition to running, he had a great passion for golf, sports, and supporting his family. His enduring love for Linda and their shared experiences brought immense happiness to his life. Our hearts ache with the loss of our Dad and "Papa," we find solace in knowing he is now reunited with Linda and in the presence of God. Jim's legacy of unconditional love and kindness will live on in our hearts as we continue to cherish the memories he created with us.

The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on February 23rd at 11 a.m. at Woody Funeral Home-Huguenot Chapel. Friends and family are invited to gather during this time of remembrance. Online condolences may be left at woodyfuneral
