La Jolla When asked what he wanted people to remember about him, he said: "I had a good life". What should be remembered about him is that he was a great husband, a good father, a loving grandfather, a great friend, a great sailor and teacher, an "OK" marine, and a "Superior" barber. He began...

Not sure what to say?

I found this picture of us from years ago which feels like it was yesterday. I have always been an Elvis fan and Jim used to cut my hair like Elvis. Now they can talk about how close his cutting was to the original. What a Guy Jim is!!!!!!!!

I was his customer since i was 12 in Delaware and we stayed friends many many years. I was thinking about him today and I found out he passed away. What A GREAT GUY!!!!!!!!

Dear Jim,

You're gone when we really need you the most.
What would help me at a time like this:

1) Your wit, sage, and wisdom, and fatherly advice.

2) A superior haircut.

3) A stiff drink.

I still look for your sign when I drive by where the barber shop used to be.
Thanks for being a great friend.
You'll be dearly missed.

Andy

Jim was my barber and a friend for several years. We were fellow Delawareans, which are rare to find in California (or anywhere except Delaware for that matter), and I really enjoyed trading stories with him about growing up in Delaware. He will be missed.

So many fond memories of my Uncle Jim!

I'm so sad to learn that Jim passed away. He was my barber in the late 70's about the time he opened the shop on La Jolla Blvd. I soon moved away but moved back and reconnected with him 3 years before he retired. Jim's hair cutting skill was par excellent. Nobody has ever cut my hair better, and my wife agreed with that. But Jim himself was a really cool person. His stories were funny and interesting. Amazingly I looked forward to getting a hair cut mostly to spend time with him and chat....

The first day I met Jim, I'd walked into his office and noticed a poem pinned to his wall. My brother had just passed away and the poem struck me right in the heart.

When I read Jim's obituary, I immediately thought of the poem. I cannot post it here because of copyright issues, but please read the poem "Sea Fever" by John Masefield, and remember Jim.

So long Jim. May you share many yarns with fellow rovers, and have a quiet sleep and a sweet dream.

Jim was a great barber but even more than the haircuts I will miss the great stories he told while I got a haircut. I will miss him terribly.

One day while in Jim's barber chair he asked if I played poker. I said I played some but not really good at the game. He invited me to a game with the group at his house and I lost over $100. That was more than 15 years ago, and I've been playing poker with Jim and the some mutual friends since then. I'm sure I won the $100 back but our poker game isn't about money. It's a chance to get together with friends, older guys (and one lady for a while); talk, tell jokes and have fun. One...
