I found this picture of us from years ago which feels like it was yesterday. I have always been an Elvis fan and Jim used to cut my hair like Elvis. Now they can talk about how close his cutting was to the original. What a Guy Jim is!!!!!!!!

Dear Jim,
You're gone when we really need you the most.
What would help me at a time like this:
1) Your wit, sage, and wisdom, and fatherly advice.
2) A superior haircut.
3) A stiff drink.
I still look for your sign when I drive by where the barber shop used to be.
Thanks for being a great friend.
You'll be dearly missed.

Jim was my barber and a friend for several years. We were fellow Delawareans, which are rare to find in California (or anywhere except Delaware for that matter), and I really enjoyed trading stories with him about growing up in Delaware. He will be missed.

I'm so sad to learn that Jim passed away. He was my barber in the late 70's about the time he opened the shop on La Jolla Blvd. I soon moved away but moved back and reconnected with him 3 years before he retired. Jim's hair cutting skill was par excellent. Nobody has ever cut my hair better, and my wife agreed with that. But Jim himself was a really cool person. His stories were funny and interesting. Amazingly I looked forward to getting a hair cut mostly to spend time with him and chat. Jim's Christmas party for Cutting Room customers was a fun time for all. Bon voyage Jim, you will be missed but not forgotten.

The first day I met Jim, I'd walked into his office and noticed a poem pinned to his wall. My brother had just passed away and the poem struck me right in the heart.
When I read Jim's obituary, I immediately thought of the poem. I cannot post it here because of copyright issues, but please read the poem "Sea Fever" by John Masefield, and remember Jim.
So long Jim. May you share many yarns with fellow rovers, and have a quiet sleep and a sweet dream.

Jim was a great barber but even more than the haircuts I will miss the great stories he told while I got a haircut. I will miss him terribly.

One day while in Jim's barber chair he asked if I played poker. I said I played some but not really good at the game. He invited me to a game with the group at his house and I lost over $100. That was more than 15 years ago, and I've been playing poker with Jim and the some mutual friends since then. I'm sure I won the $100 back but our poker game isn't about money. It's a chance to get together with friends, older guys (and one lady for a while); talk, tell jokes and have fun. One night we were playing poker at Jim's house talking about our wins and losses. Jimmy said you see that TV over there; I bought it with my poker winnings from last year. He was kidding of course, and we all laughed about it but every time Jimmy had a bad night and lost a few bucks we reminded him that we were making sure that he wouldn't be buying another TV with his poker winnings. Over the many years of playing poker with Jim he became more than a barber; he was a good friend. I will miss him as will all of us in the poker group. Jim's memory will always be a part of our poker games.

The only time in my 70 tears I looked forward to a haircut was when Jim Reid became my barber. It was always such a pleasure to hear about the colorful adventures of his earlier years, and his insight on current events.
Bright, kind, gentle and savvy, someone to count among your friends, more than a barber. Always a smile and a twinkle when he spoke about his wife!
Jim, I will be overdue for a haircut when I join you, hope you have not raised your rates. You are missed! Peace and joy, George

I was a customer of Jim's for more than 30 years. I missed Jim since his retirement and I miss him even more now. Jim was more than a barber, he was more of therapist. I shared a lot with Jim and he with me...and he never screwed up a haircut! Rest In Peace Jim.

When he was young, I tried to shoo him away. After I came to my senses, and he said that I was his hero, I said that he was MY hero. He always gave me free haircuts...and criticized others who gave me haircuts. I was happy to have him as a brother. -Paul

Jim was a wonderful bother-in-law and a great uncle. His laugh just filled your heart and home when he would visit from CA. He will be missed.

Jim was our family barber during his 3 decade residency in Bird Rock. His hair cutting was first rate, but I will remember him most for the conversations that consumed the many times I sat in his barber chair. He was a wonderful story teller and a good listener who shared his life with others while showing interest in the lives of his customers. He knew the Bird Rock community well.

Constance, Barry, and Shawna - I am so sorry for your loss. I have so many wonderful memories of my Uncle Jim! Loving, funny, ornery! We will all miss him very much. This is a pic of him with my mom and Uncle Paul. They always had so much fun when they got together!
