I was so sorry to hear about your loss. Although I never met Jim, reading these wonderful tributes helped me learn about him. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts.

Mr. Shaw's Advanced Composition class for those of us in the class of 1969 was like a jolt of electricity. His wit and his iconoclasm challenged us to see writing as a craft we could emulate, an art to which we could aspire. He is always in my head as I teach my students at Trinity College. I will never forget him.

My love of English and enjoyment of literature began in Mr Shaw's Engligh class. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Harriet Rodgers Paine class of 1970, Bloomfield HS

Sorry to hear about the passing of your beloved husband, father and grandfather. To me he was the greatest English teacher ever!! His humor, his ability to excite and motivate, his love of teaching were just a few of his wonderful traits. I think of him often. He made such a powerful impression on me.
