Jeannette “Jan” Marie (Norris) Stansberry, 74, of Belle Fourche, SD died on June 7, 2024, at Rolling Hills Healthcare in Belle Fourche, SD.
The visitation will be held on Thursday June 13, 2024, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Leverington Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, SD. The funeral will be on Friday June 14, 2024 at 10:00 am at the Connection Church in Belle Fourche, SD. Interment will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery. Jan was born on August 10, 1949, in Cherokee, IA to Ralph and Fern (Tompkins) Norris. She was the oldest of 5 siblings and raised on a farm outside of Winnebago, NE. She attended a country school until the 8th grade and then transferred to Winnebago High School, graduating in 1967. After high school she attended Hastings College for a short time. In 1968, Jan married the love of her life, Robert James Stansberry of Winnebago, NE. They were married on June 15th, at the First Presbyterian Church of Winnebago, NE. The couple then moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Robert was stationed at Fort Carson Army Base. After his time served they moved to a family farm south of Winnebago, NE for several years. In 1973, they bought a farm of their own north of Walthill, NE where they raised their daughters. Their adventures then took them to Las Vegas, NV, Pender, NE, and eventually Belle Fourche, SD. Jan was actively involved in the Walthill Methodist Church, Walthill Community Club, going to all her daughters’ sporting and 4-H events, providing her pianist skills at local churches, for weddings and funerals in the area. She was a stay-at-home mother who worked on the farm for years. When the kids were all in school she went to work outside the farm at many places…. worked at Winnebago High School, Goldenrod Hills, Center for Rural Affairs, Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, First Community Bank of Beemer, Pronto of Beemer, Tristate Museum and Visitor Center of Belle Fourche, SD, the Olive Branch and selling Keil Sweet Corn in Belle Fourche, SD. She spent many hours volunteering her time and talent where needed and always wanted to help others. Her passions were her family, her church, knitting, sewing, canning, playing cards with her family and playing the piano. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and watching them grow into wonderful people.
Jan is survived by her husband, Robert James Stansberry, her 3 daughters, Sara (Kevin) Leinart of Dakota City NE, Carolyn (Troy Johnson) Stansberry of St. Onge, SD, and Janel (Michael) Peebles of Fort Collins, CO: 6 grandchildren, Jack and Jessa Johnson, Nathaniel, Rachel, Abigail and Jacob Peebles: 1 brother, Ralph “RJ” (Sheri) Norris of Homer, NE. Jan was preceded in death by her daughter, Denise Gayle Stansberry, her parents, Ralph and Fern (Tompkins) Norris, her brothers Wade and Jeff Norris and her sister Jayne Frigge.
