Jane Morton Obituary

Jane W. Morton

Henderson, Ky.

Jane W. Morton passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, in Henderson at the age of 87.

She is survived by her husband, James Morton, of Henderson; four children, Jeff (Kristy) Morton, of Oklahoma City, John (Emily) Morton, of Henderson, Joseph (Lynn) Morton, of Henderson, and Jerry (Michelle) Morton, of Union, Ky.; thirteen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Thelma Wilson; and brother, Ronald Wilson, all of Wintersville, Ohio.

She was born on March 12, 1930, in Steubenville, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in elementary education. She married James Morton, her high school sweetheart, in 1952. Jane taught at Bend Gate Elementary School and then was named director of gifted education for the Henderson County Schools, a position she held until her retirement in 1995. Jane was an active member of both the Henderson Lions Club and Henderson Lioness Club, of which she was club president. Jane and her husband, Jim, both enjoyed traveling to numerous countries of the world, both as representatives of the Lions Club and for personal enjoyment.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2017, at First United Methodist Church in Henderson, of which Jane was a dedicated member, officiated by Pastor Cindy Green, with private interment to follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with family Friday from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Henderson Lions Club or St. Anthony's Hospice. The family would like to extend special thanks to Jane's caregivers, Joan Brock, Kendra Horton, Mary Kate Abercrombie, and Becky Dawson for their dedication. My heart goes out to Jim and sons Joe, John, Jerry, and Jeff. Jane and her family were wonderful friends to me and my family while living in Akron, Ohio, in the 1970's. Jane and I taught together; it is my sweetest memory of teaching. Jane helped me grow as a mom and a teacher. We shared our days in the classroom trying to make the best situation for our students to learn and have fun while doing it. We shared our experiences with other teachers and even wrote a book together! It only takes me a split second to take me back to the joy of my days teaching with Jane. We shared a big room, solved problems, and laughed a lot. I thank my lucky start that Jane W. Morton lived and taught when I did. Rest in peace, my friend. With love, Dr. Susan McBride, San Luis Obispo, Ca.
