He returned to NYU as Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1970. In 1972, Dr. Grosfeld was appointed Professor and Director of Pediatric Surgery at Indiana University and the first Surgeon-in-Chief of the Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He pioneered the development of pediatric surgery in the state and set the standard for the surgical care of infants and children. In 1985 he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, the first pediatric surgeon in the USA so honored. He developed excellent training programs and was a role model for his trainees. He served the University and the children of Indiana well for more than 40 years. In 2003, Dr. Grosfeld stepped down from the Chair of Surgery at Indiana University after serving 19 years in that capacity. His tenure was marked by developing new clinical programs and research facilities, the center for surgical technology, providing high quality clinical care and significantly growing the Department of Surgery from 22 to 70 faculty members.

Dr. Grosfeld was recognized as an outstanding clinician, master surgeon, inspiring teacher, talented administrator, innovative scientific investigator, surgical leader and a staunch advocate for children. He has won numerous teaching awards at I.U. including the prestigious President's Award. He was extremely productive and published 491 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, 135 book chapters and nine textbooks. Dr. Grosfeld is best known for his expertise in neonatal surgery, pediatric surgical oncology and surgical education.

He served as Secretary and Chairman of the Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics, President of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, President of the Halsted Society and was the only pediatric surgeon to serve as Chairman of the American Board of Surgery. He served as President of both the Central Surgical Association and the Western Surgical Association, President of the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS), President of the American Surgical Association, as a Governor and member of the Advisory Councils for both General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery and other Committees of the American College of Surgeons, later becoming First Vice-President, and also served as Council Member of the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons. He has been selected for Who's Who in America in 5 separate categories and America's Best Doctors.

He was awarded the Denis Browne Gold Medal by the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons in 1998 and was named Pediatric Surgeon of the Year at the University of Graz, Austria in 2000. In 2002, he received the William E. Ladd Medal from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the highest honor bestowed on a pediatric surgeon in America. Dr. Grosfeld was awarded the Fritz Rehbein Medal from the European Pediatric Surgical Asociation in 2011. Dr. Grosfeld lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally and was elected an honorary member of 15 international surgical societies including an Honorary Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of both England and Ireland, as well as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He was awarded the prestigious Solomon A. Berson Medical Alumni Achievement Award in Clinical Science from New York University. Dr. Grosfeld served as Director of Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief of Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis for 33 years and developed one of the top pediatric surgery training programs in the country. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Seminars in Pediatric Surgery, and the renowned two-volume textbook Pediatric Surgery. He was Co-editor of Surgery of Childhood Tumors. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the APSA Foundation, Secretary-Treasurer of the International Society of Surgery Foundation and Vice-President of the American Surgical Association Foundation. Dr. Grosfeld was influential in the development of the WOFAPS Foundation and served as its first president.

Dr. Grosfeld's greatest legacy is his family. He was happily married to his devoted wife Margie for the past 54 years and together they have set a standard for a successful and close family life. Dr Grosfeld was the son of Louis and Pearl (Reizes) Grosfeld. He is survived by his wife Margie (Faulkner); his sister, Claire (Bernie) Zucker; his children, Alicia (Bruce) Thorne, Dalia (Jean-Philippe) Maheu, Janice (Martin) Kaefer, Jeffrey (Deborah) Grosfeld, and Mark Grosfeld; and 17 grandchildren.

He was buried in a private ceremony by his family in Crown Hill Cemetery. Information on a memorial service will be forthcoming.

I was so very sorry to see that a great man Dr. G had passed away. I was 10 years old when he led a long and very difficult surgical procedure to help me. I had a severe case of Tourette´s syndrome which led to me having a bad Tic that caused so much damage that if Dr Grosfeld had not gone in I´d be a very different man today. I´m now 47 years old and will never forget his kindness, brilliant mind and expert care for me and my parents during my stay at Riley. I have no doubt that this man is in that next great place. My sincere condolences to his lovely wife and family

Please excuse my belated condolences, but I just learned of his passing, and I wanted the family and the whole world to know howmuch love, respect, admiration, and great fullness that I have for this man. You see I was born in May 1974 in Wabash Indiana and was having problems with breastfeeding but only on my mother's left breast,so my parents had taken me to 7 different doctors and they all had no clue or just thought that I was allergic to something in my mom's breast or breast milk needless to say they took me to the 8th doctor in Bluffton who took one look at my lump on my left side of my neck and told my parents that they thought that it was cancer and referred me to Riley and that is when Dr. Grosfeld entered my life. He diagnosed me as having Neuroblastoma cancer and treated me, but that is just the beginning of our doctor and patient relationship. I came to visit my mother in the summer of 1991 and as soon as she laid eyes on me she noticed a huge lump on the front of my throat and immediately called Dr. Grosfeld's office and he got me in to see him that same day,and when he saw me he immediately admitted me and I was scheduled for surgery the next morning to removed a tumor that had grown around my thyroid and one of my parathyroids. This tumor was an after effect of the cobalt radiation treatments that I had when I was a newborn, so again he was my angel. I saw him again a few years later when I came back to showhim that I was pregnant with my first of 3 children that I ended up having, but the reason why I did this is because my parents were told back when I was an infant that I wouldn't be able to ever have children because of all of the radiation that I underwent, and I wanted to show him that because of him I survived and I was able to have children. There is no amount of gratitude that I could give to him to ever be able to show how much he has meant to my family and I. I owe him my life because I definitely would not be here if it weren't for this great man.

Forgive this much belated message, but I just came across Dr. Grosfeld´s obituary today. I want the family to know how grateful we are for his knowledge and expertise as a pediatric surgeon. His skills helped save our newborn son. We live in the Northwest corner of the state. In 1973, our baby was flown to Riley for emergency surgery, performed by Dr. Grosfeld. It was a success. At the time, we had no name chosen for our son. We decided to name him "Jay," after the person who gave him another chance at life. Again, thank you, and may the Lord bless you with continued good memories of your loved one. One being he has a grateful namesake and his mom in Northwest Indiana. :)

I sit here in great sadness to hear about the Dr that gave me a second chance at life. I was a patient of his when I was 13-14 in 1985-86 at Riley Hospital and I wanted to visit with him to find out he's been my guardian angel since 2016. ❤

This wonderful surgeon and man was the first doctor in 1971 to diagnose not only my first baby Jodi Dickerson but two others that followed. I more or less lived at Riley for 18 years while each of my three now adult children were his patients. I can't say enough wonderful things about this amazing doctor and how much l admired him. He fondly called me" his Gary Flash" since l made hundreds of trips from Gary lndiana and West Lafayettel for lengthy stays with all three of my babies. Only" Doctor Jay" as my kids referred to him knew what was wrong and how to cure them all!!!! My son was quite a challenge for him when he developed AGING HIRSCH-SPRUNGS at age 14. I will always love Doctor Jay for his warm and friendly heart for all babies and children. He will be greatly missed by a single mom of three children l so admired. Very Sincerely, Cheryl Dickerson Markovich. Hobart, lndiana. PO Box 363

In January 1991 my one year daughter was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. A first time mother being told her one year old baby would not see her 2nd birthday was devastating. That evening her her surgen, Dr. Jay L. Grosfeld, told me my daughter would be okay - it would take several rounds of chemo, he would then remove what was left of her tumor and she would have several rounds of radiation along with more chemo, but she would be just fine. When I ask him shy he was confident that would happen, he told me, "Mom I have treated this disease for many years and when I see a child with the spirit like your daughter, God has a plan and I know they are going to be okay." I never forgot these words and when it got bad I always remembered what he told me. I am happy to say my daughter just celebrated her 29th birthday and is a teacher. Dr. Grosfeld was an extraordinary doctor and one that I have never forgotten. It was because of his kind words I was able to face what I had to during the most difficult time as a parent . A special man and a gifted doctor.

In 1974 a set of twins were born. A happy healthy little girl and a very sick little boy. After months living at Riley hospital, with so many different doctors and no one understanding what was happening, he personally came to the parents and took over looking at what was wrong. He not only figured it out, but he went through and performed those operations to save that boys life. It was Hirschsprung and in 1974, I was that little boy. I saw him for check-ups for years. I can only hope all the warmth and brightness he brought to my world, my family and the medical community, continues through the writings and inspiration of his works and deeds.

I am deeply saddened that I didn't get to thank Dr Grosfeld personally for saving my life. Forty three years ago, he removed a life-threatening cystic hygroma from my chest when I was not even two years old. I am deeply grateful that--because of his talent and expertise as a surgeon--I have been able to live a full life. What a beautiful gift he gave me and many others.

My heart just sank. I am so sorry to hear about that passing of Dr. Grosfeld. I was his 1st patient at Riley and he was always there for me when I needed him clear up through my adult life. If not for him, I would not be living today. He was like family and always treated me like one of his own. I always looked forward to my annual clinic visits for the big bear hugs that he gave me. He will always be my favorite. My thoughts are with his family.

I was a patient of Dr. Grosfeld some 28 years ago. I had Hirschsprung's disease. After diagnosis he underwent 3 surgeries to correct the condition. He wrote several academic papers on me which now seem to be on Wiki in older childrens diagnosis. He was always kind and compassionate when he treated me. He gave me such a better life. He was a truly stupendous Doctor and great man. Thank you and you will be missed. Shalom

I knew Jay when I was a student nurse at Bellevue 1959-62. I remember grand rounds where large group of doctors stood at foot of bed. Not Jay. He always went to side of bed, smiled, put & kept his hand on patient's hand. Working nights on L & M surgical ward, called him when my patient died. He came to door of small isolation room & said boo. I dropped IV bottle & glass shattered all over. Jay was on his hands & knees picking up glass then stayed with me & helped prepare body. A classmate recalls working nights on pediatric ward caring for critically ill 2 year old with burns. Jay stayed at bedside fixing IV & stayed all night comforting child. No young doctor then or now would ever do that. I never knew of his career until reading this obit. Am so proud to have known him. The values & kindness taught by his parents & grandparents in Brooklyn stayed with him. Deepest condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren, former patients, colleagues & friends. We are all so lucky to have known Jay.

Margie and family,

I hurt for you at the loss of Jay. He was a remarkable leader throughout the surgical world, and yet he never let his fame and accomplishments keep him from being a caring and understanding friend to all who knew him. Nancy and I admired you both from the times we were all neophytes in pediatric surgery and you and Jay brought your young children along to the meetings. We were blessed to get to know you better when Jay was president of APSA and I worked with him as secretary. You were always a team with so much to share with friends and colleagues.

We have surely lost a great leader whose many contributions to the care of children, to the administration of academic surgical services,to the Journal of Pediatric Surgery that is so important to our specialty, and to the training of young surgeons will continue to influence untold future generations. But of equal significance is the fact that we have lost a great friend who so thoughtfully encouraged many of us in our own endeavors.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers that the LORD will bring you peace and fond memories.

Margie and Family,

Following Dr. Grosfeld's lead and admonition, our family too would always make an effort to attend the national pediatric surgical meetings together. Our children valued this interaction as did we, and it proved to be one more example of Jay and Margie's commitment to family. My personal support from Dr. Grosfeld would be almost too numerous to recount but included his friendship, support as a fellow pediatric surgical colleague, whether as a co-member of a national surgical organization member, as a member of the James Whitcomb Riley research board, or whether as+ a member of the APSA Foundation or the Journal of Pediatric Surgery Editoriql Board. As a fellow mentor and friend in these venues, he was always there. Perhaps I am most proud that our son Matthew trained with Dr. G's Department of Surgery at IU. Jay and Margie have strengthened those around them-God speed.

My condolences to Family and Friends. Dr. Grosfeld very ably served as my Advisor during my Education at Indiana University School of Medicine from 1986 to 1990; he was instrumental in inspiring me and later helping me to secure a Residency Position in General Surgery in Ann Arbor. Dr. Grosfeld's memory was absolutely amazing; he relished in revealing surgeons' names, where they practiced, and the patients they referred to Riley. I am truly blessed to have rotated through the Pediatric Surgery Service at Riley to work with Drs. Grosfeld, West, Vane, Rescorla, and outstanding Fellows.

Jay Grosfeld was a shining pillar of Surgery at IU. I finished my medical school in 1985 and, for any student who wanted to go into Surgery as a career, it was necessary to spend a month or more on the Pediatric Surgery rotation at Riley with Dr. Grosfeld. Long days and nights. He knew my name as well as every child in clinic (often up to 50 patients) and would see them all and know all their names without prompting. A gentleman but also demanded perfection of his team from students, up to fellows, and also himself. I saw him at a meeting on a bus 12 years after I left IU and without batting an eye he said "How are you Joe?". Amazing man and Surgeon, and not one with an equal.

Dr. Grosfeld was my pediatric surgeon when I was born in 1968. He performed many, many surgeries on me. He and Dr. Roger Hurwitz made my difficult childhood, full of severe medical issues actually fun, if you can believe that! I can remember Dr. Grosfeld would bring in all the medical students and talk for long periods of time and even at such a young age, I knew those students respected him and loved learning from this remarkable physician. I'm sorry for the family's loss and I am just one of the countless patients he helped along the journey of getting through some of the worst times.

My husband and I are deeply sorry for your great loss as well as the medical field's loss. We met your very famous husband and father 44 years ago when we were fortunate enough to have him operate on our 3 week old son at Riley Hospital for Pyloric Stenosis. Dr. Grosfeld was very comforting and had such a gentle way about himself. Our son turns 44 this November and grew up hearing about Riley and Dr. Grosfeld. Since it was our firstborn child, Dr. Grosfeld knew just how to make us feel more comfortable about the surgery. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during this most difficult time. What a wonderful legacy Dr. Grosfeld has left for so many! His work and expertise will live long after his death and many children are here today because of his great work and research.
