Jay Tomeo Obituary
Augusta, GA—Dr. Jay A. Tomeo, 64, passed away at home on Thursday, June 25, 2020, from ALS.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Betty Shelby and Maurice Tomeo. Survivors include his loving wife, Dr. Rebecca Talley; daughter, Lucy Tomeo; brother, Todd Tomeo (Carol); brother, Michael Tomeo; sister, Gail Hill (Owen); nieces and nephews, Sophia and Lauren Tomeo; Nina, Max and Kate Seijn; and Joe Hill; and many extended family and friends.
"Dr. J", as he was known by his patients, was born in Burbank, CA, the oldest of four children. He grew up on the West Coast, where among other accomplishments, he was the Handball Champion of Los Angeles. After completing medical training in Chicago, he vowed to never be cold again, and moved south, eventually landing in Augusta, where he worked as a family physician for 25 years. Dr. J loved being a doctor and considered his patients part of his family. His patients will remember him for his Star Wars-themed exam rooms and he was known to do minor watch repair during physicals. He accepted many a pound cake for his services over the years. Most of all, Dr. J accepted everyone as they came, with warmth, humor and genuine interest.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Drs. Phillip and Denise Kennedy, Jennifer Agner and Jana Childs for their deep love and care for Jay. A celebration of Dr. Jay's life and style, complete with blinky lights, light sabers, rockets and dance music will be held at a later date.

I am deeply saddened to hear of our loss of Dr. Tomeo while signing on to the CPC portal today. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Dr. Tomeo wasn't just my doctor who took care of me for more than 25 years, he was my friend. He would always make a point to make sure that I understood what was going on with my health, but he also took a little time with me as a friend. He was a kind man and did kind things. He knew that I admired Leo Kottke, a guitar prodigy, and had a large poster of him in one of his exam rooms at their old office. When they moved to their new office I had asked him about it. Well, he excused himself for a minute and showed back up with the poster and gave it to me. How very kind. It's now the center point of the tribute I have for him, and others in my man cave. It will now have an extra special place for me. So, I will now say goodbye my friend and look forward to seeing you on the other side.

As you know, Dr. Tomeo loved his patients and my entire family sought his care when we were sick, needed a physical or we had other minor or complex issues. I cried the day he told me he was leaving his practice and I dont think I will ever find another doctor in which I cared so much for and appreciated like I and my family did Dr. Tomeo. My extremely shy adult son was reluctant to see a new doctor when we moved to Augusta but when I showed him a pic of the collections Dr. Tomeo had, he began to see him and did until Dr. Tomeo retired. My son told me last week he had passed away and we both had a very tearful moment.
I am so deeply sorry for your and your daughters loss. Your kind and caring husband and Lucys loving dad will always be missed. This world needs more people like your kind and compassionate husband.

Dr J Tomeo loved everybody. I will never forget the day he agreed to see my daughter on an emergency basis. He saw her even though she was not an established patient yet, and got her admitted into the hospital even though her medical insurance was not yet approved at the time. Shed been denied treatment and sent back home five (5) times from the EMRs. As it turned out, Dr. Tomeos lovingly kind act literally saved my daughters life. That was about fifteen years ago.
He was genuinely a gr8 doctor- easy to talk to & sincerely Cared about people and his patients. That is why I recommended him to family and friends.
I am so sorry to hear that ALS got the best of him. I believe he's Living in Peace in the Spirit Realm.

Jay was my doctor for a long time. I was distraught when he retired. I had an appointment every three months, and I enjoyed every one of them. I looked
forward to them, in fact. We never failed to have an interesting chat. I now cherish those chats more than ever. When he entered the room, with his friendly face and his special aura of goodness, my day was always brightened. We shared some of the same patients in our practices, and all I heard was praise for Jay. When they would tell me Dr. Tomeo is my doctor, I never failed to say, mine too!
Jay had a gift. There are few people I remember seeing for the first rime, but I remember the first time I saw Jay. It was in a coffee shop early one morning. It seemed there was something special about him, and years later when I became his patient I learned my initial impression was exactly correct. We were not personal friends, meaning we didnt socialize, but I considered him a friend. I hope he felt the same about me.
I grieve his passing. He will be missed by so many.

My Uncle Jay was one of the sweetest and most caring people I have ever known. Since I was 14 years old he would fly me out to Augusta every summer so I would be able to spend time with him, my Aunt Becca, and Lucy. He taught me how to build rockets and would take me to the park to set them off. His goofiness and fun-loving attitude about life was so special to me.
One summer I got to work in his office & I loved being able to spend so much time with him and learn about his work. I was able to see the kind of positive impact he had on everyone he encountered. He cared so deeply about the people around him, and it showed. He inspired and encouraged me to work hard and get to a good college, always telling me that I could do whatever I set my mind to. I am forever grateful for his persistence and support, treating me like I was one of his own daughters. I am so sad for his passing but I know he will forever be in our hearts and watching over everyone who was dear to him. Rest in peace Uncle Jay, I love you so much.

Dr. Tomeo was quirky, funny, wise, and a phenomenal doctor and true friend.
He literally changed my life having seen me in a wheelchair and on crutches (which I had been using for over 16 years), he talked me in to having bilateral hip replacements after every other doctor had said no, you are too young, you are disabled, accept it. And my life is forever changed because he saw past statistics and saw me.
When we had no money for medication, over and over again he gave us free samples to get us through. He bought my husband a nebulizer on line without cost to us.
When he retired, I bawled, knowing how much I would miss him. Now I can only imagine how his family must feel. I love that the family is planning a celebration of this fine mans life. It sounds so much like him.
To Lucy, you should know, he talked lovingly about you almost every visit. And he always smiled when he did.

Dr. Jay was my doctor for 12 years. My heart is broken to hear of his passing. He was a caring and loving doctor. He always took the time to listen and talk with me, regardless of how busy he was. Love and prayers for the family, friends and patients of this wonderful man. RIP Dr. Jay, you are greatly missed.

I was so sorry to hear about Dr. Tomeos untimely passing. He gave me a job as a medical transcriptionist when I was a college student and then he became my doctor and then he became a friend. He brought a lot of joy and laughter to his patients through his practice. I will definitely miss him!

This is heartbreaking- He was my Doctor when I first arrived in Augusta 30 years ago - He was in solo practice at the time and I followed him over to CPC when he joined them - I had a tremendous amount of respect for him and he was more than just a doctor - he was a friend - Live long and prosper my friend in the heavens and stars you so much loved

My husband, Alan and I were patients of Dr J for 21+yrs. Not only was he a wonderful Dr. but he was our friend. A loving caring man. Who loved his Star Wars. He and Alan played out a scene one day in his examine room. He loved life and we could always make him laugh. I cried for days when he retired but knew he was happy with his decision. We love you Dr J. And you will surely be missed. RIP And well see you again one day. May God Bless.
