Jerry AVEY Obituary

AVEY, Jerry Roy
Jerry Roy Avey, 63, of Round Rock TX passed away on January 29. He was son of the late Ruth and Ray Avey of San Marcos TX.

After graduating San Marcos High School he attended Southwest Texas State University in 1970. This is where he met his devoted wife Melinda in 1970 and were together until his passing. After two years he transferred to UT Austin where he graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree. His first job was at Medical Monitor in Austin where he worked about a year. Then he got his dream job at Westinghouse that later became Teco-Westinghouse where he worked his way up through several different job titles to the last one as Chief Engineer. He was still employed until recently when he was fighting mylofibrosis, which is a kind of cancer. He made several business trips overseas. One of his greatest and proudest accomplishments was working in Taiwan and mainland China in teaching motor repair. Many people called him, 'Motor God', because he often could solve a motor repair problem when no one else could.

He had polio at age 20 months that affected his left leg but that did not keep him from doing what he enjoyed. He enjoyed listening to rock music and going to concerts. He enjoyed shooting pool and had played in a City wide league during the early 1990's. A first place win led them to play in a district 8 Ball tournament in Las Vegas. He enjoyed fishing and also swimming. Some of his favorite times when young were swimming in the Blanco river at his Aunt and Uncles place in Wimberley. During the last 15 years he enjoyed photography and special effect photo editing.

Surviving to treasure his memory are his wife Melinda, his twin brother Terry and his friend Pam Kittner, his sister Raetta and her husband Bill Aleshire, his sisters in law Marlene Sewell and Pam Peterson, brother in law Brian and his wife Marianne Peterson, several nieces and nephews, and cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and Aunts and Uncles. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

Very very sad to hear of my dear friend Jerry's passing but find some comfort knowing he'll soon be shooting pool near the Lord's Table with his coy smile and booming Hey Cowboy to all the newcomers. 37 years ago I befriended Jerry as a young engineer, and we quickly became good friends. We enjoyed many evenings together washing away the problems at work and laughing over a few Lone Stars. I have fond memories of Jerry coming to my wedding and not long thereafter he married the love of his life in Melinda.

When I traveled back to Austin, I tried to make time to stop by and catch up with Jerry and enjoyed listening to his latest stories which he told so well. Through the years, we may have been separated by geography but I never forgot our friendship. I'm confident others that knew Jerry will attest as I have many times, that his friendship helped enrich my life and those who were around him. I'm at a loss for how to comfort Melinda and his brother Terry during this difficult time but will include them in my prayers. God Bless.

I only met Jerry a couple times but pray the he is now with God. I know Jerry's family, his dad, mom, aunt, uncle and brother Terry. I rest assured that Jerry lived up to the Avery's good reputation thus is at peace with God..
