Jo Ann Ryan, 99, of Spring Hill, FL and formerly a longtime resident of Homosassa, passed away on Mon., Oct. 13, 2025 at her home. A native of Buckhannon, W.Va., she was born Nov. 9, 1925 to Joseph W. and Sylvia M. (Queen) Marteney, one of two children, and grew up in Weston, W. Va.
A resident of Spring Hill for the past 8 years, she was a past resident of Sunflower Springs Assisted Living in Homosassa for 2 years, then Sugarmill Woods in Homosassa for 34 years prior. A retired and much loved and respected school guidance counselor, Jo Ann served Cold Spring Harbor Junior High School for 18 years in Cold Spring Harbor, NY.
Mrs. Ryan was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Homosassa, where she served on many committees over the years. She was also a constant participant in adult Sunday School, Bible studies and the Prayer Chain. Jo Ann was also an active member of the Crystal River Women's Club, where she served as Educational Chairman, and was also an active member of the Ladies of the West Citrus Elks.
An avid reader, Jo Ann was part of a neighborhood book club for many years. A very gregarious and outgoing lady, she loved enjoying time with people and along with her late husband of 55 years, Okey Ryan, who passed in 2003, loved traveling and visited all 50 states and several foreign countries. Family vacations and reunions were among her favorites, both with immediate and extended family. Jo Ann was a good bowler, and participated in league bowling with her late husband.
In addition to her parents and loving husband, Jo Ann was preceded in death by her daughter, Jo Ellen Ryan-Dickerson (husband Donald Dickerson) of Vinton, WV and her sister, Mary Ellen Cole. She is survived by her four children: Patricia Sue Ryan (David French), Bolingbrook, IL; Okey R. Ryan, Spring Hill, FL; and twins Richard David Ryan (wife Roxanne), Brandon, FL and Robert Daniel Ryan (wife Jennifer), Riverview, FL; son-in-law Donald Dickerson, Willis, VA; grandchildren Ryan Gardner McDaniel (wife ennifer), Mechanicsville, VA; Mary Elizabeth McDaniel, Greensboro, NC; Eric David French, Chicago, IL; Kimali Faith Habib (husband Hunter), FL; Tarah Grace Ryan, FL; Michael Okey Ryan, Tallahassee, FL; Catherine Ann Ryan, London, England andMatthew David Ryan, Brandon, FL and Declan Porter Ryan, Riverview, FL; and great-grandchildren Aubrey, Liam, Dylan and Joelle, all of Mechanicsville, VA; Violet Alderman of Greensboro, NC; Amelia, Madilyn and Hadley Habib all of FL; and Clayton and Easton Ryan, FL.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Jo Ann in January 2026 at Fountains Memorial Park in Homosassa, Florida. Jo Ann's care entrusted to Macrini-Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa, FL.
