I am saddened to learn that Mr. Bartlett has passed. He was my teacher at Toms River HS North. It was his passion for teaching and dedication to public service that made a lasting impression. He educated us on the World War I & II and the destruction those wars caused for humanity. He also made sure that new voters at the age of 18 voted, especially in the local school board education. The first time I voted was in the April School Board election, a month after I turned 18. In college, I decided to pursue my education in political science. Every time I exercise my right to vote, I think of Mr. Bartlett. May he rest in peace.

I'm saddened to learn of John's death. I met John in 1965 when we were both freshmen at Presbyterian College. He & I along with two other guys had to live off campus in a wonderful southern ladies',Mrs. Young's, house. John shared a room w/ David Aiken & I with another fellow.
I knew John to be a fellow of intelligence & a determined curiosity. He was mentored by a Theological Professor, Dr. Morgan, who was well thought of by students & probably not so much by the conservative administration & local community. During the summer of 1966 Dr Morgan with the help of PC students & probably John started a Head Start program to help children in a black community.
Even as a freshman, John was far ahead of the crowd, myself included, in social activism & independent thought.
In reading about his life & accomplishments, I found myself not surprised, but glad to have known him. He accounted for himself well & lived his potential.
I'm sorry for his loss to you his family & to his community. God help & heal you with his love. Mike Meeker

Freeholder Bartlett was a great example of dedication and commitment to the people of Ocean County. His commitment to the Parks and Public Lands was outstanding. His vision and dedication will never be forgotten. He has been a great Freeholder, champion of our environment, and as a a Pine Beach resident myself, a great neighbor. Our condolences go out the Bartlett family.

I will always remember John showing me the shed he built in the backyard and explaining to me the intricacy of cutting all the precise angles to make the roof. He was so proud of that piece of his work. My condolences to the family.

John was a class act and always acted with integrity whether he agreed with you are not. He made being a politician a good and noble endeavor. Unfortunately, there are few politicians who are cut from his mold in today's world. We will miss you John. Rest in Peace.

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Bartlett as a teacher. He was one of a kind as a teacher and a person. I am a better person because of him. I will never forget his lectures at High School North. God bless you and your family. Everyone will miss you.

Joanne and I send our sincerest condolences to Peg and the Bartlett family. I served with John on the Board and respected him for his dedication to the people of Ocean County. He had the foresight in 1997 to establish via voter referendum the County's open space committee an asked me to serve to ensure it was bipartisan. Since then we have preserved about 27,000 acres of land in Ocean County from development. When I was Mayor of Toms River, John and I became closer as we worked on projects together and I thank him for his advice and friendship. He will be sorely missed in Ocean County. Unfortunately, we are out of state until next week and will miss the services but at 4pm Friday, we will pause to reflect on John's life in Ocean County. RIP, John Bartlett. Paul C. Brush
