John "Jack" Harris Clotworthy, 87, a resident of Annapolis for 23 years and prior to that McLean, VA, died December 21 at his residence. Jack was born in Baltimore on March 23, 1924. After high school, he joined the Maritime Service, where he was commissioned as LTJG in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a Professional Ocean Science Engineer as an executive with Westinghouse Electric for 19 years. Jack was the director of Congressional Affairs with NOAA, followed by a position as General Manager for the Joint Oceanographic Institutions, Inc. (JOI). Among his achievements, as a Professional Ocean Science Engineer, he negotiated a joint agreement with French ocean explorer Jacques Yves Cousteau for the design and building of Deepstar 4000, a two-man research submersible vehicle that went to a depth of 4,000 feet into the ocean. He was the Treasurer and Secretary of the Atlantic City Convention Hall Organ Society, Inc. (ACCHOS). Other memberships included Annapolis Yacht Club, National Oceanography Association, Marine Technology Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Geophysical Union, American Guild of Organists, International Club of Annapolis, and the Grace United Methodist Church of Baltimore. His hobbies and interests included tennis, pipe organs, and sailing. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Violet Klein and Harris Clotworthy; sister, Ann Clotworthy Charlton; and his wife of 50 years, Martha Wilson Clotworthy. He is survived by his son, John Stewart Clotworthy of Fallston; grandsons, Andrew Clotworthy of Philadelphia, and Colin and Meghan Clotworthy of Fallston; nephew and nieces, H. Douglas Charlton, of Chadds Ford, PA, Victoria Lynn Charlton of Waldorf and Debra Lasher of Hollywood; and life companion of seven years, Terry Douglas. No public arrangements will be made. John M. For the record I want to say that Jack was a gentleman, a visionary, a savvy corporate thinker, a great lover of pipe organs, especially the Mid-mer Losh at Boardwalk Hall. He had an infectious laugh, a great sense of humor, suffered no fools and was very wise. I serve on the HORC board because of Jack. We were sort of "partners in crime." He was a total delight to work with and he will be sorely missed by me, HORC and ACCHOS, as well, naturally, by his intimate family and friends. Go Jack and join Lillian Levy and Redenia Gilliam-Mosee, other great HORC board members we have lost. As I often quoted Lillian to you, I will now be quoting you to others. Vicki Gold Levi
