Not sure what to say?

I only learned of Johnny's death today. My mother and I lived next door to Johnny and Betty in the duplex in Ft. Worth that we rented from Johnny's dad. Johnny was my hero growing up: First, he was the Marine who gave me one of his shirts with the 1st Marine Division patch and his "buck sergeant" stripes when I was about 6 or 7, which I wore until it fell to pieces when I was in 5th Grade. Johnny would be back in Ft. Worth off and on in my adolescent years and would take the time to give...

I was so sorry to read about the loss of your father. Please know that mine and the thoughts of many are with you at this time of great sadness.

Mimi, you were one of my best friends in 5th-6th grade in Midland. If you don't remember me that is okay but to let you know that my prayers are with you and your family. I lost my dad in 1974 at the age of 40 and that has been a hard time especially after having my children. I know that he is watching over me and my family as yours will. I have thought about you over the years. You had to have really been my friend because your image always stayed with me. May God be with you at this...

Dear Hackney family: I am grieving the loss of one of finest human beings I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Hack and I became good friends during our days at Merrill Lynch. His wedding gift to me and my (then) husband was the Rehearsal Dinner ... catered by the best ... Johnny's Bar-B-Q. He went with us on a river trip down the Rio Grande, and on the trip he became a father figure to the son of one my friends ... a great teen-aged kid whose real father was divorced from his mother...

Truly a sad loss. I spent many summers running take out orders from Johnny's to my Grandfathers office in the Mid American Building as a child. Johnny always had a good story and a quick smile. He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten.

God bless Johnny and his wonderful family. You have had such a difficult summer. I send prayers and hugs to you all.

To the Hackney Family,

Your father had such a wonderful spirit which he passed on to all of you. That spirit and love of life was evident especially in our friend and your sister Cissy.

Our prayers go out to you.
