John Hackney Obituary

John William "Johnny" Hackney, longtime area resident and businessman, passed away on July 29, 2007; he was 83 years old. He is best known to Midlanders for the legendary "Johnny's Barbecue," which he opened in 1951 and operated for over 50 years.

Born and raised in Fort Worth, Johnny joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 at the age of nineteen. He was soon stationed in the Pacific theater, where he served until the end of World War II. He was actively engaged in combat in a number of campaigns, including New Britain, New Caledonia, Peleliu and others. He was a proud recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in Okinawa, where he was positioned "from day one until it was all over."

After his discharge from the Marines, Mr. Hackney returned to Fort Worth and finished college at TCU. In 1946 he married Betty Davitte, also of Fort Worth, and the couple moved to Midland in late 1950. During his many years in the restaurant and catering business, he also had successful forays into other careers. His knowledge and passion for geography led him into the travel industry for a number of years in the 1960's. During the early seventies he became a stockbroker and began working at Merrill Lynch, where he developed lasting friendships in the Midland office.

Mr. Hackney was preceded in death by his wife in 1988, his parents, T.E.D. and Fanny Belle Hackney; brothers Robert McCart Hackney and T.E.D. Hackney, Jr., and one daughter, Kathryn "Cissy" Zollo.

He is survived by three daughters, Lynn Staley (William) Yarger, of St. Louis, MO; Amanda (Peter) Michaels, of Los Angeles, CA; and Mimi (J. Robinson 'Rob') Kerr, of Houston, TX; son in law Richard Palmerton, of Austin, TX; sister Frances (Don) Sutton, of Fort Worth, TX; sister in law Kay Hackney, of Odessa, TX; grandchildren, Reid (Marshall) Thompson, Gretchen (Patrick) Shipley, Kate Staley, Patrick (Kim) Zollo, Jimmy and Spencer Michaels, and Caroline, Isabel, Lucy and Sophie Kerr; great-grandsons, Marty Thompson and Luke Shipley; numerous nieces and nephews; and his devoted companion for many years, Kelley Jones, who remembers with great fondness their time together.

Johnny had an abundance of friends, both living and departed. Those who survive recall his generosity of spirit and the countless occasions made possible by his hard work. The family would especially like to thank the Hospice of Midland staff for their invaluable services, and caretaker Gloria Sepulbeda for all the attention and comfort she provided throughout the past several months.

Mr. Hackney was a longtime parishioner of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, where he served on the Vestry and in other capacities over the years.

The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Tuesday, July 31, 2007 between the hours of 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. Funeral Services have been scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hospice of Midland, 911 W. Texas, Midland, TX 79701, or the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, 1412 W. Illinois, Midland, TX 79701. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. To place online condolences please visit www.mem.com.

I only learned of Johnny's death today. My mother and I lived next door to Johnny and Betty in the duplex in Ft. Worth that we rented from Johnny's dad. Johnny was my hero growing up: First, he was the Marine who gave me one of his shirts with the 1st Marine Division patch and his "buck sergeant" stripes when I was about 6 or 7, which I wore until it fell to pieces when I was in 5th Grade. Johnny would be back in Ft. Worth off and on in my adolescent years and would take the time to give advice or just listen without laughing at me when I would tell him of "crises" in my teenage life. He was the big brother I needed, since I lost my dad in World War II. I treasure his memory. May he rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon him.

Mimi, you were one of my best friends in 5th-6th grade in Midland. If you don't remember me that is okay but to let you know that my prayers are with you and your family. I lost my dad in 1974 at the age of 40 and that has been a hard time especially after having my children. I know that he is watching over me and my family as yours will. I have thought about you over the years. You had to have really been my friend because your image always stayed with me. May God be with you at this time.
In His Loving Hands,
Cheryl Williams Robinson

Dear Hackney family: I am grieving the loss of one of finest human beings I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Hack and I became good friends during our days at Merrill Lynch. His wedding gift to me and my (then) husband was the Rehearsal Dinner ... catered by the best ... Johnny's Bar-B-Q. He went with us on a river trip down the Rio Grande, and on the trip he became a father figure to the son of one my friends ... a great teen-aged kid whose real father was divorced from his mother and who never came around. He took that kid under his wing and dunked him in more mud than you can imagine! Heheheheh! Unfortunately, in all of the splashing, that's when he lost that great lion's head ring that he used to have. Years ago, I helped him organize a lot of his stock transactions for income tax purposes, and I refused payment because he was my good friend. He showed up at my doorstep with a brand new micro-wave oven. I didn't have the pleasure of seeing him much in the past many years, but I could go on and on about the greatness of your father... how he gave a free meal to every transient who showed up at Johnny's Bar-B-Q. How he was always there for every friend he ever had. This man was a giver, not a taker. I want you to know that every time I was around him, he bragged on each and every one of you ... how he loved you, how talented you are, and the latest news in your lives. This was a Dad and Granddad who loved his kids. I'm proud to say that he was my friend, and I know that you are proud to say that he was your Dad.

Truly a sad loss. I spent many summers running take out orders from Johnny's to my Grandfathers office in the Mid American Building as a child. Johnny always had a good story and a quick smile. He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten.

Thank you Johnny for your wonderful BBQ. I lived in Midland from birth in 1966 to 1987 and it has always been my favorite BBQ. It was also my dad's favorite who moved here in 1957 to work for Texas Electric. Rest in peace Johnny.

I remember as a child, my mother and I going to Johnny's for barbecue. I am now 60, living in San Antonio. I have never found any barbecue as good. Every trip I have made to Midland over the years has included a trip to Johnny's, La Bodega and Luigi's. Johnny's and Mr. Hackney are memorable parts of my life. I will miss them both.
