Freddie Nelson Bruton, lovingly known as “Papaw” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully at his home on February 2, 2026. He was born November 19, 1939, in Throckmorton, Texas, to the late Nelson and Virginia (Landrith) Bruton.

Freddie devoted his life to learning, family, and quiet joys. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas, a master’s degree from the University of New Mexico, and completed doctoral work at TCU. While teaching in Albuquerque, he met fellow educator Janet Irene Meeks, whom he married on February 28, 1964. They made their home in Weatherford in 1968, where Freddie spent 26 years at Weatherford College teaching history and serving as head of the Social Studies Department, retiring in 1994.

A faithful member of South Main Church of Christ when health allowed, Freddie lived with steady faith and integrity. He embraced his interests wholeheartedly, enjoying fishing, hunting, golf, card games, dominoes, reading, and classic western movies - often with a Dr. Pepper in hand, which was rarely far from him. A football fan, he proudly supported the Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys. Freddie was also known for his humor, teasing everyone and giving them a hard time.

Above all else, Freddie treasured his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Janet Irene Bruton; his daughter, Jennifer Bruton Davis, and husband, Timothy of Temple, Texas; and his son, Jud Nelson Bruton, and wife, Ally of Gig Harbor, Washington. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Hannah Beth Ketteman (Alex), Luke Davis (Kaylee Jo), Hope Meriwether (Ryan), Jace Bruton (Stephanie), Kaden Bruton, Gabriel Bruton, Mary Grace Bruton, and Ellinor Tibbs; and his great-grandchildren, Amelia Ketteman, Alton Ketteman, Everett Davis, Walker Davis, and Lila Bruton.

To honor Freddie's life, a visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, at 913 North Elm Street in Weatherford, Texas. The funeral service will take place the following day, Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., at the South Main Church of Christ, at 201 South Main Street, Weatherford, Texas. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens of the Valley Cemetery.

Freddie will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and Papaw, respected educator, and a man whose life quietly influenced many.

Revelation 21:4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed.
