John Hicks Obituary

Dr. John Arlin Hicks, age 91, of Germantown, Tennessee slipped peacefully into the arms of his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ on September 19, 2022, after a brief illness. Dr. Hicks was born to Jewell Elizabeth Hussey and Gail Russell Hicks on November 4, 1930, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. During his life, he lived in Oklahoma, Texas, California, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Alabama.

He graduated from Bethany Nazarene College and held degrees from the University of Oklahoma and received his Ph.D. from the University of Memphis. He was an industrial/organizational psychologist with broad experience in consulting and human resources. During his career, he was employed by Ernst & Ernst, Harbridge House, Plough International and Auburn University Center for Business, and Auburn University. He was a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology and the Academy of Management. He consulted with the State of Alabama, the City of Montgomery, Alabama, Jefferson County, Alabama and numerous other countries and municipalities.

He chaired the City of Germantown Senior Advisory Commission for a number of years and continued his consulting work well into his 80s. He was a member of the English Speaking Union and Germantown Baptist Church. John was an avid reader, seeker of knowledge, lover of life and soft-spoken source of strength to all who knew him until his passing.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Eudalia (Dale) Sue Raines Pinson Hicks, his children, John Arlin Hicks, Jr., Georgia Hicks Rucker (John), Lori Hale, Suzanne Pinson (Tom Cole), Wendy Hicks Maddox, Rachel Pinson Langston (Kevin), Charles Lee Pinson, Jr., Sean J. Hicks, his grandchildren, Neale Hicks, Emily Hicks, Catherine Portera, Colleen Gomez, Lucy Landrum, Max Maddox, Grant Langston, Raines Langston and six great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Johns-Ridout, Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham, Alabama on Wednesday, September 28 at 1:00 p.m. with a burial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Germantown Historic Church at the corner of Germantown Road and North Street in Germantown, Tennessee on Saturday, October 8 at 1:00 PM, with Dr Kenneth P Story officiating.

Dr Hicks supported many charities. Please direct any memorial donations to his favorites - Salvation Army, other Christian charities, and Memphis Food Bank.
