"Mike" Higgins and Imogene McPhetridge Higgins. He died on October 26, 2014 after a long illness. His father was a coach and his early childhood was spent in several small towns in Oklahoma. He then moved to Oklahoma City, where he attended Northwest Classen High School. He graduated from Alva High School in 1964, and from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1967. When our catcher, Rex, broke his thumb in Amarillo at a baseball game tournament probably in the 7th grade, I was the replacement having never played catcher. Pete told me about the signals for a curve or fastball, etc. He never adhered to my signals. He was like Fernando Valenzuela in that he had every pitch. He was a great guy. I just found out about his passing.

Linda as you know Dr. Higgins was a good friend as well as a great boss. I was fortunate to have have him and several others who demonstrated the model of balancing leadership and friendship in my latter VA career. Thank God for him and the role he served in helping to further my career. May God bless you and your family continually.

Linda, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. John was one of my favorite people from high school. I loved his sharp mind and his quick wit. His humor was always part of who he was. He was smarter than the rest of us but he never made us feel inferior. He and I spent a good deal of time fighting over who would sit on the end of the bench in basketball. I always enjoyed his running comments like being a play-by-play announcer during the game of Tom Gosset's High Arc shots or Larry Anderson's rebounds and Ronnie Moreland's quick hands. Who can forget his use of Coach Ross Smith's favorite saying. We both loved baseball and spent many hours on the baseball buses cracking up at John's imitations of Harry Carey or his jokes about his own failings at the sport he loved. Take heart, he is now turning double plays in heaven. Rest In Peace, old friend.

Linda, as you recall, John was our first recruitment priority when we came to the OUHSC to rebuild the endocrinology section. John was an excellent teacher and with Ron Painton joining us our residents were in the top quartile nationwide during the next 5 years in scoring for endocrinology. He was a great internist and administrator-physician as well; so we were happy for him but sad for us when he left for Amarillo and his rising career in the VAMC. Please accept our best wishes.

Linda, I was sorry to hear of John's passing. I was blessed to be one of the Medical Center Directors working for John when he was a Regional Director. He impressed all of us with his passion for veterans healthcare and his drive to provide the best services possible. In his many roles within the VA he clearly had an impact on the VA system and more importantly the veterans he served. He was a good leader and a good man. He will be missed.
