Not sure what to say?

John was one of my closest colleagues when he was at the Department of Justice. What a guy!! It sometimes seemed like he was born a century too soon. He had such a reservoir of the classics that always amazed me. We tried a case together when he was at the DOJ and became close friends. John was a great soul and will be truly missed.

John was such a good friend and a really lovely guy. He is greatly missed.

I happened to be thinking of John last week, unaware that the anniversary of his passing was approaching. John was such an important influence early in my career. He taught me to trust my instincts, which is one of the hardest and most valuable lessons for a young lawyer to learn. I will be forever grateful.

I was deeply saddened to learn of John's passing during a Harvard Class of 1986 reunion of first year dorm residents of Matthews Hall South. John and I became friends then and continued our friendship as we transitioned to Lowell House. We overlapped as students at Harvard Law School. Our birthdays were near each other and shared an interest in history and literature and found humor in the everyday. I have so many memories of fun times (especially the year John's Halloween costume was a...

My wife Jill and I have just heard that John passed away a couple of months ago. He was a great friend and we will miss him greatly. I knew him through our joint membership of ARIAS US. More than once he sent me a book for Christmas nicely inscribed by him with a warm message of good wishes. Just the nicest possible guy. Lovely memories of dinners with him will stay with us for long time. We send his husband our heartfelt condolences.

John was a great friend and mentor. I worked with John relatively briefly but he was the one of the first lawyers who was a mentor to me and we spoke regularly over the years, typically when I needed sound counsel on an important career decision. John was a brilliant, incredibly talented lawyer — but even more importantly he was modest and kind friend. I will miss him a great deal. My sincerest condolences to John’s family.

Prayers and fond memories are what you have to remember your dearly departed. May the love of family and friends comfort you during these difficult days. Please accept my most heartfelt condolences.

In my 24 years at Steptoe, John was one of the kindest and gentlest people I ever worked with there. He always had an encouraging and positive word to say in any situation when we worked together. Would that the legal profession not be stereotyped by public perception but be characterized by what John brought to the profession. RIP John.
