John McAtavey Obituary


Family-Placed Funeral Notice

REV. JOHN JAMES McATAVEY 77 years old, of West Palm Beach, Fl, died Friday, November 4, 2005. Born August 12, 1928 in Crossdale, Middletown, County Armagh, Ireland, he was the son of James McAtavey and Catherine Mooney McAtavey. Fr. McAtavey was ordained to the priesthood on June 17, 1954 at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity in Waterford, Ireland, by the Most Reverend Dr. Cohalam. His first assignment was the Little Flower Parish in Hollywood, FL in September of 1954. He served briefly in St. Juliana Parish in West Palm Beach in 1959 before being assigned as Administrator of St. Elizabeth Parish in Pompano Beach. He became Pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in 1965 and then Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Stuart in 1968. From 1982 until his retirement in 1996, Fr. McAtavey served as Administrator – Pastor at St. Jude Parish in Tequesta. He celebrated his 50th Anniversary of Ordination in June, 2004 with a celebration at Noreen McKeen Residence. He leaves behind his family in Ireland; brothers, Patrick J. McAtavey and Michael McAtavey and sisters, Bridget Rose Trainor and Mary Philomena McAtavey. Visitation will be held between the hours of 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 8, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 204 U.S. Highway 1, Tequesta, FL, with a Scripture Service to be held at 6:30 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, November 9, at St. Jude Church, with interment to follow in Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, Royal Palm Beach, FL.
