It was a honor and a truly wonderful experience to have known and worked with Jack McCarthy. Jack was extremely skilled, as an educator, in administering the day to day activities at the W. Irving School. He was firm but fair when dealing with the students. Mr McCarthy was a great listener and he genuinely cared about his student’s issues, concerns and well being. The students under his care, who had graduated, always came back to the school to thank Mr McCarthy for his...

John for me you will always be Mr. McCarthy the caring school staff at the Washington Irving. Cheered us on both in academics and in basketball. We always loved you, you will be missed my condolences out to the family.

Jack was a kind and calm mentor to me and other "rookie" teachers at the Irving. His guidance carried many of us through our teaching career.

Forever grateful.

Jack McCarthy was a gifted educator and a valued friend to me for many years. His gift was his love for his fellow humans, be they students, parents, or teachers. The loudest most enthusiastic applause from the students at graduation every year was for Mr. McCarthy. He was equally their advocate and the person who held them responsible, a tough balance, but one which he accomplished year after year.

We are all better for having known him and learned from him.

Jack was a kind man, always glad to help his fellow teachers and of course, the students. Everyone loved Jack at the Irving!

Jack used to come to my classroom and we would debate the issues of the time. The students loved our "discussions". He will be missed for his enthusiasm and for being a friend. Forever in my memory. -- George

Jack was a “gentleman’s gentleman”, truly invested in the total education of those children who were lucky enough to come under his watch.
He was a model and an inspiration to those of us who were fortunate to
have shared many/any of those 40 years Jack spent at the Washington Irving. An Irving Roslindale legend.

Jack was a great gentleman. He was a wonderful friend and colleague. I will always appreciate his mentor ship to the students of Washington Irving Middle School.

Jack was great to work with - helpful, supportive, always there. Jack was not only my supervisor - he was a friend. During a rough time for me as part of a massive layoff he gave me much needed support and comfort. The world will miss John McCarthy.
