It was a honor and a truly wonderful experience to have known and worked with Jack McCarthy. Jack was extremely skilled, as an educator, in administering the day to day activities at the W. Irving School. He was firm but fair when dealing with the students. Mr McCarthy was a great listener and he genuinely cared about his student’s issues, concerns and well being. The students under his care, who had graduated, always came back to the school to thank Mr McCarthy for his caring and understanding of what they experienced at that time period of their lives.

I always had great conversations with Jack, whether it was about the different Boston sports teams, politics, or the day to day news happenings. He was a true gentleman, honest, moral, patriotic and extremely knowledgeable about American history.

Jack was a tremendous assistant principal who was always there to assist, assess and determine the best course of action for both the students and faculty during every school day.

All of us at the W. I. miss you. God bless you!

Jack was a kind and calm mentor to me and other "rookie" teachers at the Irving. His guidance carried many of us through our teaching career.

Forever grateful.

Jack McCarthy was a gifted educator and a valued friend to me for many years. His gift was his love for his fellow humans, be they students, parents, or teachers. The loudest most enthusiastic applause from the students at graduation every year was for Mr. McCarthy. He was equally their advocate and the person who held them responsible, a tough balance, but one which he accomplished year after year.

We are all better for having known him and learned from him.

May the road rise up to meet you, Jack,
and may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Jack used to come to my classroom and we would debate the issues of the time. The students loved our "discussions". He will be missed for his enthusiasm and for being a friend. Forever in my memory. -- George

Jack was a “gentleman’s gentleman”, truly invested in the total education of those children who were lucky enough to come under his watch.
He was a model and an inspiration to those of us who were fortunate to
have shared many/any of those 40 years Jack spent at the Washington Irving. An Irving Roslindale legend.

Jack was great to work with - helpful, supportive, always there. Jack was not only my supervisor - he was a friend. During a rough time for me as part of a massive layoff he gave me much needed support and comfort. The world will miss John McCarthy.
