John Stewart Obituary

John N. Stewart

Norfolk - John Norman Stewart, 98, passed away in his home on July 7, 2016. His devoted son, Brian held his father's hand as he peacefully went to be with the Lord. John was born in Norfolk, VA, the son of the late George Albert and Anna Sykes Stewart. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Florence Leighton Stewart; his brothers, Frederick, Robert, George and Donald Stewart and sisters, Virginia Larmour, Anna Corner and Elizabeth Hill.

John is survived by his son, Alan Brian Stewart of Norfolk; daughter, Joan Peake and husband Steve; grandson, John Peake all of Virginia Beach; grandson, David Peake of Norfolk; daughter, Christine Sparks and husband Michael; granddaughter, Amy Urquhart and great grandsons, Braeden, Ian and Graham Urquhart all of Williamsburg, Va. John is also survived by his sister, June McGehee of Bloomfield, MI and many nieces and nephews.

A veteran of WWII, John served in the US Army 407th Combat Engineers. He retired from the Civil Service where he was employed at the Naval Public Works, Norfolk. Fiercely independent, John continued to prepare meals and manage his home well into his 98th year. He'll be remembered for his quick wit and laugh-at-life sense of humor. His tender dedication to caring for his son Brian was admired by all who knew him.

A private graveside service officiated by Rev. Scott Chafee will take place at Princess Anne Memorial Park at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. The graveside service will be followed by a Memorial Service at Kings Grant Baptist Church, 873 Little Neck Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23452 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kings' Companions Ministry of Kings Grant Baptist Church. Dear Joan, Christine and Brian I am so sorry to learn of your father's death. Despite living so far from Virginia, I have always wished that I might have overcome the distance and taken the time to get to know my father's family better. John, like all his siblings was so handsome and blessed with a kind spirit and lively intellect. I see such a resemblance between him and George. I plan to be in Williamsburg and hope to catch up with Joan, Christine, and Anne Hill as well as to meet Brian. Many blessings to all John's children and his friends. My deepest sympathies, Rives Stewart Skotnick in Dallas, Texasi 214 520 6379

Joan, Dagmar and I are sorry to hear about the loss of your father. God was kind to have him share life on this earth during his 98 yrs with his wife, son and a wonderful, kind and caring daughter and son in law, Steve. And the joys that his grandchildren gave him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you,
Dagmar and Carl
