Not sure what to say?

Sorry Sandy, we were so close friend in hs.

As others have mentioned a true gentleman. And one of the nicest most easygoing people I ve had the pleasure of knowing and seeing over many years. RIP John

John was a true joy to talk to. We shared many conversations over the years when he came into Bellair to meet with a client, visit with his lovely daughter Julia or just to have lunch. We shared many experiences from living in Charlottesville. Such a kind, caring man & had great stories to tell. I looked forward to seeing him walk in and take a seat at one of the tables by the window. Here´s to you John... a true gentleman.

This is very sad news. I taught Julia long ago in 6th grade Language Arts at Henley Middle School, and she had such supportive, loving parents-fond memories of a wonderful, close knit family. I am so very sorry. Sarah M. Walter

I went to Woodberry with John and also enjoyed a business relationship with him. He was more than kind, in fact he was truly magnanimous in spirit. He will be missed by many.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Sandy and all the family at this sad and difficult time. I knew John from our days at GWHS. John was a good guy and will be missed by all who knew him. Another good one lost much too soon.

I first met Mr. Updike as a new teacher when I had the privilege of teaching his daughter, Julia. He was always kind, supportive, and willing to help. It meant a lot that whenever we crossed paths, he took time to catch up. Julia reflected his good nature, and I´m grateful to have known them both. My thoughts are with the family - so sorry to see this.

To John Updike's family; I did not know Mr. Updike but his father, Dr. Glenn Updike, was my physician and delivered both of my children. If his son is anything like him, he was a kind, thoughtful, giving gentleman. I am so very sorry for your loss. God bless you during this sad time.
