John Updike Obituary

John Boatwright Updike, 67, of Charlottesville, VA died peacefully at home on August 18, 2025. John was born July 14, 1958 in Danville, VA, and was the son of Glenn Brady Updike, Jr. and Elizabeth Boatwright Updike. He graduated from Woodberry Forest School and the University of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Glenn.

John was known for his ever-present kindness and compassion for others, along with his warm, welcoming presence and sense of humor. His family and many, many friends were the center of his life. He took pride in his career as a realtor with Roy Wheeler Realty, loved music festivals and golf, and relished every opportunity to cheer on the Virginia Cavaliers.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy (Sanchez) Updike; his daughter and son-in-law, Julia and Will Merritt; his sister, Leigh Updike Braun; his brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Hazel Updike; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Special thanks are given to John's wonderful caregivers: Amanda Sipe, Amanda Dixon, Dan, and Brenda, and the team from Hospice of the Piedmont.

There will not be a formal memorial service. The family asks that you honor John's memory by embracing the simple joys of life, as he did so well.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.abettercremation.org. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Piedmont (hopva.org, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911).

Yesterday

To John Updike's family;
I did not know Mr. Updike but his father, Dr. Glenn Updike, was my physician and delivered both of my children. If his son is anything like him, he was a kind, thoughtful, giving gentleman.
I am so very sorry for your loss. God bless you during this sad time.

I remember John back in 1971 when I was with assistant pro at Danville. golf club. he would hang out in the pro shop and had quite a personality! I never saw him without a smile
It is my prayer That Sandy and the rest of the family will receive God's comfort and peace during this time of sorrow

Yesterday

I first met John Updike when he moved next door to me in the mid-1980s. My toddler daughter immediately fell for his sweet nature and we all welcomed the inclusion of the love of his life, Sandy. They were the best neighbors ever and we remained close friends. John is just one of those people that leaves the world reminding us of the importance of family, civility, kindness, and the pursuit of joy. Charlottesville music folk knew John well and admired his bluegrass and folk music knowledge. Like all of their friends, I will hold Sandy and Julia in my heart as we quietly celebrate John's life and deeds.
