JOHN WILLIAMS Obituary

WILLIAMS JOHN ROBERT WILLIAMS John Robert "Bob" Williams, 55, a writer and editor at Consumers Union's Washington office, died of pancreatic cancer January 23 at his home in Arlington, VA. Mr. Williams joined Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, in 2006. Previously, he worked for the Center for Public Integrity in Washington. While there, he headed a project on the oil industry that won the 2004 Society for Professional Journalists' award for online investigative reporting. Earlier in his career, he was a reporter at the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., and was instrumental in the newspaper's Hurricane Floyd coverage, for which it was a finalist for the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in breaking news. He also worked as a Washington correspondent for Crain Communications, and he started his own business publishing real estate newsletters in the suburbs of Washington. Mr. Williams was born in Norfolk, VA, and graduated from Radford University in Virginia with a bachelor's degree in journalism. Survivors include his wife of nine years, Susan Pruett Williams; three brothers, Harrell Greer (Joyce) of Columbia, S.C., Larry Greer (Judy) of Sterling, VA, and Edward Greer (Betty) of Herndon, VA; one sister, Anne Evans (Jack) of Fairfax, VA; three nieces and four nephews. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 2, at Arlington Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA. The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, February 3, at Clarendon United Methodist Church, 606 N. Irving St., Arlington, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. www.murphyfuneralhomes.comwww.murphyfuneralhomes.com
