Johnny Weaver Obituary
Johnny went to be with his Lord on February 15, 2008 at CMC University Hospital. Mr. Weaver, age 72, was a long time Charlotte resident. After retiring from a 30 year career with the Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, he has been employed with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Sheriff's Department for the past 19 years as a deputy. Johnny was an active member of the Fraternal Order of the Police.
Survivors include his wife, Penny and daughter, Wendi Weaver, both of Charlotte, and a son, Billy Weaver of Illinois. Also surviving are his grandchildren Scott and Christine Weaver also of Illinois. Johnny was predeceased by his parents.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday evening February 19, 2008 from 6 to 9 pm at McEwen Pineville Chapel 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28210. Funeral service is Wednesday February 20, 2008 at 12 pm in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Hometown Heroes, P.O. Box 953, Monroe, North Carolina 28211-0693.
McEwen Pineville Chapel is serving the Weaver family.

I am 64 years old. I started watching you in 1968 on WCHS TV channel 8 out of Charleston WV. It was a real treat for me whenever you and Becker wrestled on TV against the various "heels" in the territory like The Andersons, Hawk and Hanson, The Infernos with JC Dykes. RIP knowing you have fans that still remember you to this day, 7-8-2025.

I was a young girl and you were my favorite wrestler. I saw you in person and watched you wrestle. You got hurt and I started crying. My mom couldn't find me and she looked and somehow I made it to the ring and you had me sitting on your lap. I was probably about five years old. You then gave me a signed program. Sadly I lost that program through the years, but the memory is so vivid in my mind. I love you and hope u rest in peace.

My dad used to take me to dorton arena in Raleigh to watch johnny and Greg valentine wreastle..I always loved johnny.just stumbled across this after wondering what happened after the China man put sleeper on johnny..boy was I in shock..Johnny we shall meet again...love ya miss ya

I used to watch Johnny Weaver and George Becker wrestle as a tag team at Starland Arena in Roanoke, Virginia, when I was a young kid in the 60's. I remember them and the Scott Brothers would always remind me sort of like my Western Heroes at that time, about good over evil. I'm in my upper 50's now, and I will always remember him as one of my favorites.

Wendi, You know its seems like just yesterday that Johnny was at the house enjoying himself. I was always proud that he could come to my house and stay a few days and really enjoy himself,We'd either be watching the race or watching a ball game.He and I always had our little talks. Wendi, I know I am late sending this condolence note. I just found out tonight at work (Roanoke College/Campus Safety Officer. I am so sorry about the passing of your Dad and Mom. They both were favorites of mine thru the years. I have a book that I received a few years back that your Mom sent me Banner Days and autographed. I will treasure it for life. I also saw your Dad wrestle many times in person in the past. I remember seeing a picture of you in one of the Wrestling magazines years ago picking a guitar and riding horses with your Mom. You were so beautiful but what can you expect from having a Dad and Mom like Johnny and Penny. I know this has been a really painful experience for you. Having lost my own Father to cancer 4 years ago and having two daughters myself and probably being close to your age this was shattering news to me. Your Mom and Dad are no longer suffering nor in pain so I know that eases some of your pain. I know you think of them every day and that is normal. I have been down that road with my the loss of my own Dad. I regret reaching out to you so late but I had to as they both were heroes of mine in my formative years. Some of my earliest memories of the old "Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling" are of Johnny Weaver and Art Nelson on TV on Saturday afternoon, or at least hoping they would be. I would be trying to convince my mother that going to the live matches at Roanoke, Va.'s Starland Arena was a good idea, but I was never convincing enough.
Thank you Johnny for all the great memories. I have more than enough to last my entire lifetime. Rest in peace, old friend.

I have just learned of Johnny's passing. My what great memeories I had as a child in Charleston, S.C. going to County Hall on Friday nights to see Johnny Weaver and George Becker take on Rip Hawk and Swede Hanson. I can remember talking my Mom and Dad into taking us to the Hall early so that we could park behind the building to wait on Johnny and George. At the time, they also had the great Sailor Art Thomas with them. We got there and waited about an hour. A new station wagon drove up and out came Johnny, George, and Art with big smiles on their faces! They were glad to see us and they even offered us some of their Kentucky Fried Chicken! They spoke with us, showed us their muscles, and you bet, Johnny even demonstrated the sleeper hold for us. After some hugs, autographs and well wishes, we were off to the balcony to see the match. What a true Gentleman! Back in the 1970s, wrestling was a great family outing. It was clean and decent. Thanks to the men that made it that way for us as kids. We will miss you Johnny. May God Bless you and your family in the loss of such a great man! I spent many Saturdays in my childhood watching Johnny and George Becker on TV. I thought Johnny was so handsome, and I sorta had a "crush" on him. I liked him so much, my brother nicknamed me "Weaver" which he still calls me even today. My mother-n-law worked at Broughton Hospital and got his autograph for me. I was thrilled. I always wanted to meet him, but never got to. May he rest in peace, and know that he brought a lot of enjoyment to many people.

On behalf of the 1953 Classes of East St.Louis, Il High School, we wish to send our deepest sympathy. Johnny (Kenny as we all knew him) always came to our class reunions and everyone looked forward to seeing him. Our 55th reunion will be held in October and he will be greatly missed. We did not know of his death until we read the obit notice about Penny. He was a great guy during our school years (some from 1st grade on through 12th) and apparently with all the wonderful tributes to him in this guest book he continued to live a wonderful life. Although Wendi we never had the pleasure of knowing you, we wanted to let you know how much we all thought of your dad. I sent photos to him not knowing he passed away and they were very good of him with some of our classmates. Hope you received them as they were sent to his address. It was with great shock and sadness that I logged onto the MAG web-site and learned of our dear friend, Johnny's death. My friends-Dottie, Mary and I traveled the same roads as did that Brown Cadillac from 1978-1983 covering western North Carolina, Upstate (sometimes the whole state) SC and some of Tennessee. If Weaver, Steamboat, Landel, Youngblood, Flair, or Valiant were on the card--we were probably there on the front row or so--if possible. Johnny was not only a friend to us and all those guys, but he was a mentor to them as well. I don't think I have been as affected by any public person's death, until now; since that of Jay Youngblood. I know they appreciated him and by all the fans who looked up to them all fans in general. Now they are all retired or passed away, except for Jimmy's limited schedule. I'm sure Johnny will be missed by many in both his careers, he touched people everywhere he went. I haven't had the pleasure to see him nor any of these wrestler friends since '83, but I know that I could still consider him a friend. From all I've read, I see that he was still that man.
Wendi, let me say that I have never heard a father speak with more proudness and love than your father did of you. My prayers are with you. I know how it is to be "Daddy's girl", even though I am 50 years old and feel like an orphan when your dad passes away so suddenly. That's the way my dad went also. Let us cherish the memories and look forward to seeing our loved ones in heaven. May your comfort be in Jesus--for HE will sustain you through this difficult time. I'm glad that when he turned out the lights on Thursday night, that he opened his eyes in heaven. The party has just started and it's called eternity!

I remember from my childhood, many Friday Nights that I was taken to Wrestling at Strawberry Hill in Richmond,Va. by my family and Johnny will always be a big part of those memories. My mother used to always tell about the time Johnny prevented an intoxicated man from falling on me while I was in my stoller at Strawberry Hill. Some years later, I was able to meet Johhny and told him the story, it bought a smile to his face.It was a great honor to meet Johnny and fortunately I was able to speak with him many more times when he visited Richmond.Johnny will be missed, a legend has left the ring.

I was a huge wrestling fan as a kid in Anderson, SC abd U remember when wrestling came to the rec center I would go. The admission was cheaper for kids 10 and under and I got in for the cheaper rate until I was about 12 and had to pay more. But whatever the cost, I loved watching Johnny Weaver wrestle. In person and on TV. And I am glad he was one of the good guys, it made him tham much easier to like and to root far.

Even though over a week has passed since Mr.Weaver passed away, the shock of his passing still seems surreal. There are people in our lives that have touched us so deeply that we tend to forget that they are not immortal. And he was one of those people. Mr.Weaver never acted like he was "above" everyone else and never refused to give someone an autograph or put a smile on their face. Although I do remember that one time he had broken his toe and a group of us were laughing and joking with him about it. His reply was that anyone else would not have been able to walk around with a broken toe, but he was because he was in great shape. He was joking, of course, but looking back over the past few months, I dropped a keyboard on my toe and even though I didn't break it, it was still hard to get around. Mr.Weaver, you have made such a tremendous impact on so many people's lives, that you will be remembered for generations to come. To his daughter, Wendi, remember that your father's legacy has been passed down to you. And I'm sure that he will be smiling down on you from heaven as you keep his memory alive. God bless you and the rest of your family.

I worked with Johnny at the Sheriff's Office and he was the best thing that I ever saw. No matter where I was sending him in the state he always went and never complained. He was the most dependable person that I worked with. He will be missed greatly at the Sheriff's office and in everyone's hearts.

I just want to say thanks to everyone for all of your support. Thanks again to the sheriffs department for everything that they did for our family. Upon arriving home to Collinsville Illinois, I opened my mailbox to see a birthday card to me from Johnny that he mailed out the day before he passed. In which he wrote "Hope everybody is fine I'm good still hard at work Grandpa Johnny Weaver". Since I received this after he passed, I think it is really a message to everyone and wanted to pass it on. Thanks again

On February 15th I recieved the hearbreaking news that my lifelong hero had passed away. I'm 42 years old and my earliest memories in life are of Johnny Weaver. My memories consist of asking for his autograph at the Cumberland county memorial arena and Johnny saying "hold this"[his Southern tag team championship belt that he held with George Becker] or inviting Johnny and George to Sunday dinner at my aunt's house which was right down the road.I figured they had to eat somewhere and it might as well be with us. I have gotten his autograph and seen Johnny more times that I can guess. I wanted to be Johnny Weaver when I grew up. I am now a Independent wrestling promoter because I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my hero. At my next show I will open it by tolling the bell for my hero. Johhny rest in peace and thanks for influencing my life. But most of all thank you for being my hero!

Johnny was the main event at My very first wrestling match, I watched him on TV and then at Star Land Arena for years, even wrote to him on how to get into wrestling in my teens, Now I've been wrestling for 31 years and just last year did I really meet and talk to him, then last Nov. we had a show with him on it in Rocky Mt. Va, and there I was in the ring with Johnny Weaver,"in his famous sleeper hold", my wife watched and said she had chills as a dream had come true in my wrestling career, this may have been the last time Johnny was in the ring, he meet me that night and we was friends ever since, we would exchange emails all the time, when you was Johnny's friend ...you WAS Johnny's friend, we all took away some great memories that night and I'll never forget how he was like a little kid in the back room, his eyes were just lit up as we got ready for the matches, I'll miss him but will never forget him.

Wow, it's been a few days now, and I'm still shocked that Johnny is gone. I never got to see him wrestle live, but he commentated a couple shows I saw live and of course on TV. I knew him mostly through our respective jobs. He transported clients to the hospital I work at. He was always a super nice man, always gracious and seemed genuinely happy to see you. I tried not to bug him too much with wrestling questions, but couldn't resist most of the time. And he would always answer any questions I had or tell stories of the road. I will truly miss seeing him pull into our lot. I'll never forget the memories of getting to know him the last 4 years. My condolences to his family. The world has lost one of the greatest people ever to walk the Earth.

Wendy, I was a fan of your father starting at the age of nine and am still a fan of his. I lost my dad a year ago. He had just celebrated his 73rd birthday. I just wanted to let you know that all through the years I attended the matches, he always talked about you. Probably because you and I are close in age. He was so proud of you and you could tell that he loved you so much just by the look on his face when he spoke about you. I almost feel as if I know you. He was a person you could not easily forget. A few years back around 2001, my Mother and I were reintroduced to Johnny. Instantly it was as if we had been friends forever. In no time at all we were all a family spending all the holidays, birthdays, and vacations together.

I just want to say how sorry I was to hear of Johnny Weaver a true legend of professional wrestling has passed away.I will always remember the great matches he was in.I always loved when he'd sing "TURN OUT THE LIGHTS THE PARTYS OVER.THEY SAY THAT ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END".His life is over here as we know it.But his life in heaven has only begun.

Johnny was at our last legends fanfest in charlotte,nc.He was a gem!I have lost a lot of my wrestling friends,dick murdoch,etc and johnny was one of the best.When you grew up with them as well as personally know them and a lot of their families,it makes it harder.People just really dont know how hard it was to make it in the biz back then and he did it!The biz is very hard and we must treasure our guys-young and old!God called him to heaven because he knew he needed another angel(and another tag team partner for someone up there).God bless Penny and their daughter.If you ever want to tresure these guys and show support,come to the legends fanfest in charlotte,nc this year and you will find out what it is all about!

Every Saturday evening I would watch Johnny on Bill Wards wrestling program. And then we would drive to Charlotte on Monday nights to see him wrestle at the Park Center. It was a time in my early years that causes me to remember the good times. Thank you, Johnny ........

Johnny was always a good leader. He never had a cross word for anyone in or out of the ring. I had the best of him in the ring and lestin to him out side of it too. He gave me good advice a long time ago I hope it took hold on me.I like to hear him talk about the old days and some of the road trips. I will surly miss him as I do all the others that have past in my life.

I started watching you when I was 8 years old. You were a legend in the ring, an asset to the Mecklenburg Sheriff's Dept. and to the people you served. It is with great sadness to hear of Mr. weaver's passing. He and George are tag teaming together again in heaven. A true class act who did not need enhancement drugs to perform in the ring. He made Championship Wrestling in North Carolina, the shows were taped on Wednesday Nights at WRAL-TV5 and shown on Saturday afternoons at 5:pm. He tagged with the likes of George Becker, Haystack Couhoun, the Scott Brothers and many more. I loved the matches between Johnnie & George vs. Rip Hawk and Swede Hanson. His Match with Dory Funk Jr. is legenday even though he had to go to Florida and wear a mask to get a match with him and who could forget his matches with Ike Eakon and Baron Von Roskey. He and Penny made such a great mix team duo. It was also a class act to read the condolence from Rip Hawk, I know they were great friends.

To the family of Mr. Weaver,
I guess you could say i was "raised right" and an elder is Mr or Mrs,no matter how many times he told you to call him Johnny.
I never got a chance stand in the middle of the ring and introduce "the master of the sleeping hold" as i came along a few years later.
He was one of a very few guys who everybody in the locker room said only good things about.
When the baddest of the bad say good things,you have to be a o.k. guy.

I spent a many Saturday evenings with my grandfather watching Johnny put someone in the sleeper hold.My uncle,grandfather,and I would load up and go to the Char. Col.,Park Center or Lexington YMCA to see our heroes beat the bad guys.My prayers are with the family.

Mr Weaver was a big chunk of my childhood, watching the Johnny Weaver and George Becker team on Saturdays with my brother and cousins and jumping off of furniture with glee !! ..How about that "Sleeper" ?? I can remeber Johnny when I was 9 yrs old at the Spindale House in Spindale NC. He and George Becker came out of the dressing room amd Johns wife at the time Penny Banner was there. Johnny
seemed like a giant to me. About 50 yrs later in the dressing room at the Spartunburg Memorial Audotorium I seen Johnny again and related that story to him. He smiled and complimented me on my watch I was wearing. he was always one of my heroes. Ill miss you Johnny

Johnny was one of the class acts of the wrestling world. My memories of watching him wrestle and later announce will always be cherished.
