Jonathan Edwin Grisham The world became a darker place on September 16 with the sudden passing of one of its bright stars, Jonathan Edwin Grisham. Jon was born in Long Beach, California on July 19, 1958. He attended UC Irvine, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1981. He went on to attain his...

Not sure what to say?

Jon and I started as Attendings at Oakland Children's Hospital at the same time. I just heard of his death from my brother-in-law who attended the celebration this weekend. He was a take charge man who was at the right place at the right time to make big and necessary changes. My wife (also a physician) and I were shocked and dismayed to hear that such a fit and vibrant person has passed away at such a young age. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I only knew Jon by reputation, by his colleagues' admiration, and by his compassionate, expert, professional, collegial telephone consultations when I needed to get children from my ED to his higher level of care at Childrens' Hospital. I'm grateful for the support he offered my patients and can only imagine the loss felt by his family and friends.

I trained at Children's Hospital Oakland and when I look back at my residency the person that stands out from all my great teachers is Jon. He will be missed.

We have not seen Jon in 35 years. Our memory of him, as our son's close friend, is of a happy and bright boy. We are not surprised to find that he grew into a loving, kind and giving man. Having lost a child ourselves our heart goes out to Ruth and to his wife and children.

I didn’t know Jon very long or very well. But, I do know that he had dreams and aspirations and worked hard to have them come to fruit. I know he loved children. He had child type qualities of his own even as an adult. He could identify with the young ones. This made him a good father and friend to his own children. It made him a good pediatrician and friend to his patients. From the well deserved bragging his mom has done I’ve learned about his pioneering work with children’s pain. I...

The word of Jon's passing is just starting to spread down here. We were grade school friends in Long Beach. We played on the same lousy Kiwanis little league team. He had a great tree house in his backyard where we hid various treasures we'd found in the alleys near our houses. I lost track of Jon after high school, but the obituary in the Chronicle shows he had a wonderful, rich, loving life doing important work. A fantastic trip with a too early ending.

Andrea-
You opened your home to us when we visited Michael and Georgeanne. John turned me on to Robert Earl Keen. I think Keen's "Merry Christmas From the Family" will never be the same for me. Keep the flame.
