Joseph DEL PONTE Obituary

DEL PONTE, Joseph P. 'Papa'
A resident of Sacramento, passed away peacefully on April 3,2012, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86. Born March 26, 1926, in San Rafael, CA. As a young boy during the Depression era, he sold newspapers on the corner; those earnings helped with family expenses. After later moving to Sacramento and attending Sacramento High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, becoming a member of "The Greatest Generation". After his discharge, he met and married his beloved wife, Gloria. They were married 55 years before her passing in 2002. He worked for the Sacramento Police Dept. for 20 years before retiring as a sergeant. Though he became an avid cyclist late in life, he and Gloria enjoyed a lifetime of traveling and golf. He attended countless events and milestones of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A kind, loving and generous man, his family was a tremendous source of pride and love, they will miss him greatly. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Ruth Del Ponte; his wife Gloria; daughter Patti Jo Del Ponte; brother Edward Del Ponte; and sister Angelina Quinn. He is survived by his daughter Linda Wallace (Vern); grandson Jeff Wallace (Kim); granddaughters, Shelly Bautista (Marco) and Gina Monaco; great-granddaughters, Alexandra Bautista and Jaye Wallace; brother Robert Del Ponte (Roberta); sister Patricia Collins; and many nieces and nephews. A Visitation will take place on Monday, April 9 from 4-7pm and Funeral Service on Tuesday, April 10 at 11:00am, both will take place at Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger Funeral Home, 5401 Folsom Blvd., Sacto. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Vitas Hospice. Rest in Peace, Papa, we love you. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in his name to Vitas Hospice.

To all of the DelPonte family I am so sorry for your loss. I came across this while I was looking for my own grandfathers obituary on the exact same day. Its crazy how things happen in life. When I was younger my mom and Patti worked together. And for a few days every summer I would go and stay with Gina and Patti. I have so many great memories. It has been so long since I have seen Gina and hope this makes its way to her. Again, Im so very sorry for the loss you all feel. I totally understand what you are going through. Like I said my Grampa died the exact same day. Love, prayers, and warm thoughts to you all.

I am so saddened to hear of Joe's passing. What a huge loss to those of us still here on Earth. I have so many great experiences and memories with him, Gloria, Patti Jo, Linda, Vern, Gina, Jeffrey and Shelly that I will always cherish for the rest of my life. Joe treated me like a daughter and I will miss his big heart, kindness, generosity and great sense of humor. My deepest condolences to all of his family and friends. His legacy will live on in all those who were fortunate to know this wonderful man. Until we meet again... Rest in peace.

What a wonderful man... Joe and Gloria were customers at Sheldon Golf Center, and after Gloria's passing, Joe continued to come in, have some coffee, and share his good spirit with us. Such a gentleman. You are missed, Joe...

I love Papa! I will always remember his funny comments! ("All I need is a bed, a microwave, and a pisser").

It was so nice to have dinners with him and Gina--especially since my own grandparents passed away during my high school years. Papa always gave me and Gina that priceless Grandpa humor and advice. Rest in Peace "Papa."

Dear Del Ponte Family,

We've been neighbors with Joe for over 40 years. He was such a nice man and quite the character! We'll miss seeing him doing his yard work, riding his bike for hours around the neighborhood and having humorous chats with him. The place won't be the same without him! What a lovely family he left behind--we're so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace Joe.
