With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Joseph A.A. Helminski, known to most as 'Double A,' on August 14, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on April 19, 1948, Joseph lived a proud, hardworking, and strong life that touched countless people and left a lasting mark on his family, friends, and community. He was a graduate of Manistee High School and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University.
Joseph's many contributions brought joy and pride, and his service had an enduring impact on Manistee. Over the years, he gave generously of his time and talents, serving as City Councilman, Planning Commission, Building Inspector, youth sports coach, and more. He also played an active role in the National Forest Festival, the Polish Festival, and other community events, always proud to share and celebrate his Polish heritage.
A master craftsman and builder, Joseph was the proud owner of Helminski Construction for more than 50 years and a lifetime member of the Bricklayers Union. His work can be seen throughout Manistee, from the 5th Avenue Beach House to numerous city projects that remain as lasting testaments to his skill and devotion to his hometown.
Joseph found enjoyment in reading, lifelong learning, sports, and hunting. He was also a lifelong member of the Manistee Golf and Country Club. Above all, he cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved his boys and their families deeply.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife Mardi Sue, and their three sons and families:
- David Joseph (Amy) of Manistee and their children Kaitlin (Garret) Helminski of Manistee, and Lauren (Nick) Horton of Smithfield, VA, along with their daughter Elaina Horton, Joseph's treasured great-granddaughter.
- James Joseph (Lindsey) of Ada, MI, and their children Addison, Conner, and Kensington.
- Joseph Andrew (Kelly) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and their children Hadyn, Lily, and Ryder.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, and his brother, Thomas.
Joseph lived with pride, strength, and purpose. His legacy of service, craftsmanship, and love of family will endure for generations.
Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
