Joseph Helminski Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Joseph A.A. Helminski, known to most as 'Double A,' on August 14, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on April 19, 1948, Joseph lived a proud, hardworking, and strong life that touched countless people and left a lasting mark on his family, friends, and community. He was a graduate of Manistee High School and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University.

Joseph's many contributions brought joy and pride, and his service had an enduring impact on Manistee. Over the years, he gave generously of his time and talents, serving as City Councilman, Planning Commission, Building Inspector, youth sports coach, and more. He also played an active role in the National Forest Festival, the Polish Festival, and other community events, always proud to share and celebrate his Polish heritage.

A master craftsman and builder, Joseph was the proud owner of Helminski Construction for more than 50 years and a lifetime member of the Bricklayers Union. His work can be seen throughout Manistee, from the 5th Avenue Beach House to numerous city projects that remain as lasting testaments to his skill and devotion to his hometown.

Joseph found enjoyment in reading, lifelong learning, sports, and hunting. He was also a lifelong member of the Manistee Golf and Country Club. Above all, he cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved his boys and their families deeply.

Joseph is survived by his loving wife Mardi Sue, and their three sons and families:

- David Joseph (Amy) of Manistee and their children Kaitlin (Garret) Helminski of Manistee, and Lauren (Nick) Horton of Smithfield, VA, along with their daughter Elaina Horton, Joseph's treasured great-granddaughter.

- James Joseph (Lindsey) of Ada, MI, and their children Addison, Conner, and Kensington.

- Joseph Andrew (Kelly) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and their children Hadyn, Lily, and Ryder.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, and his brother, Thomas.

Joseph lived with pride, strength, and purpose. His legacy of service, craftsmanship, and love of family will endure for generations.

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of arrangements.

Earlier today

As cousins living only blocks apart, we spent lots of time at each others house playing kids games and baseball and football. Joe grew into a pretty classy guy, cocky at times but had a good sense for business and contributed to the City of Manistee that will be long remembered. Joe worked hard and played hard while raising his family.
This is totally a shocker as we have not heard of any slowing down due to illness.

Deepest condolences to Mardi and all the family. RIP JOE.

I am so sorry to hear this news about 'Double',,, he & I worked on a handful of projects throughout the years, one notable was the 5th Ave. Beach House. I sure enjoyed listening to Doubles stories and learned a lot from him.

Double 'thank you', e.

It truly saddens me to hear the Double A is gone my deepest condolences to his Wife Mardi Sue and all the Helminski family. Double A and I go way back many years had fun playing sports together mainly MRA basketball and Fast Pitch Softball at Sands Park. Double A and I worked together on many unions' construction jobs. I worked for Double A Helminski Construction Company, and I will say the Double treated me always like family. Double A was a hard worker on the job and paid his worker well for a good day's work. I always said the Double would go to work in designer jeans do the work of two men and never come home dirty. I will never forget being invited to the Helminski deer camp and the many great times we had Double sons were young lads back in those days I was invited. Oh, how Double A loved when his father would pack him a sandwich and he would sit all day waiting for that trophy buck by his tree. So many great times we had together. I miss you Double A give a big hug to our friends in Heaven and give Butterscotch (butter) a big hug from his ole friend Duke. I'm sure if the Lord allows dogs in Heaven butter met the Ole Double A at the gate. R.I.P. brother Joseph AA Helminski I will never forget you

This is a beautifully written tribute to Mr. Helminski's life. It explains why his son, Joe, is so remarkable. What an amazing legacy! My heart is broken for Joe, Mardi Sue, and the rest of the family during this time, and wish to send my love and prayers.
