Joseph Mainz Obituary

July 6, 2016
Joseph Edward Mainz went into the peaceful and loving embrace of Our Lord and The Blessed Mother on Wednesday, July 6th at the age of 72 after struggling with dementia. He was loved as a husband, brother, and uncle.

Joseph was born to Emily Rolf Mainz and Fred C. Mainz, Sr. in December, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas. Joe grew up in San Antonio and graduated from La Salle High School. He worked for over 30 years for Kelly National Bank at Las Palmas, which became Exchange National Bank and then Norwest National Bank. He was long-time member of The St. Joseph Roman Catholic Benevolent Association and the San Antonio Model Railroad Association (SAMRA). He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for the past 24 years.

He enjoyed 9-pin bowling at Wetmore Bowling Club and many of the small country lanes in the area. He also bowled and won trophies in 10-pin leagues at the old St. Joseph Hall that was on Commerce St. and later at Hermann Sons. He also participated in some league State tournaments.

Joe spent his life pursuing his love of trains which had interested him since childhood and was an avid Southern Pacific Railroad fan since the late 1950's. Joe had built more than one model train layout but the last 24 years he was working on and enjoying his latest model railroad layout which depicted the area from Flatonia to Hearne, Texas. He designed and built prototype buildings and signals with complete scenery. One of his greatest accomplishments was having his model railroad layout featured in the 2008 Great Model Railroads published annually by Kalmbach Publishing Company.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Fred C. Mainz, Jr. In addition to his parents and brother, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Dorothy Hugman; brother-in-law, Henry Hugman, Jr., and his wife Hedy; also brothers-in-law, Gene Mersinger, Ron Wolff and Fred G. Hartmann, Jr.

Joe is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sharon Ann (Hugman) Mainz; sister, Jeanette Curren and Husband Tommy; sister, Sandra Wolff; sisters-in-law, Annette Mainz of Boerne and Dorothy Hartmann of Lufkin, Texas and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

A Visitation will be held at 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 17th followed by Rosary at 7:00 pm at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. The Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 am on Monday, July 18th at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Arden Courts and Legacy Hospice for their excellent care and concern. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the San Antonio Model Railroad Association (SAMRA), 7702 Narrow Pass, Live Oak, Texas 78233 or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 600 Oblate Dr., San Antonio, Texas 78216. Sharon:
Jeannette, Sandra so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I know Jeannette and Sandra will miss Joe along with other family members. We know Joe is now with our lord along with his mom, dad, and brother he loved so much. I'm sure they were waiting for him with open arms at heavens entrance.
May you be blessed with the spirit of the lord in days ahead. God Bless!

When I think of Joe, I remember his unbelievably amazing railroad configuration which had it's own separate room, and his pride in his creation. Only a man of infinite patience and attention to detail could create such a work of art. Lee joins me in sending blessings, and condolences to the family.

I will miss you as a friend and neighbor. My old dog, Frida, will miss your frequent visits as your health failed. In the end God knew you were tired and ailing, and decided to reach out to you, took you into his loving arms and bestowed his grace upon you. May you rest in peace. We know you are in a better place now. Yet Sharon and I will miss you dearly.

May God bless your family in this time of sorrow. I had the pleasure of working with Joe at Kelly Field bank. I will always remember his sack lunches, his tupperware glass for his tea and of course his black mustang. Rest in peace my friend Joe!
