Joseph P. Manguno

Joseph P. Manguno, 87, of New Orleans, beloved husband of Lois Cusimano Manguno for 67 years, passed away January 21 in Covington, Louisiana, after a hard-fought battle against cancer. Joe was born in New Orleans in 1927 to Bartholo and Beulah Manguno, the only son of three children. He was preceded in death by sisters Beulah "Tookie" Lewis of Louisville, Ky., and Patricia "Patsy" Smiley of Covington. He is survived by three sons, Joseph Jr. of Marietta, Ga., Bart A. of Folsom, La., and Michael K. Manguno, of Covington; three daughters-in-law; Elisabeth Jorgensen Manguno of Marietta, Ga., Linda Lee Manguno of Folsom and Brandy Manguno of Covington; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Joe served in the 6th Marine Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II, in Guam and Tientsin, China, where he witnessed the surrender of Japanese forces in China in 1945. After his discharge, he joined the Marine Corp Reserves and served as a drill instructor for the 1st Army, 10th Battalion of the Marine Corps League Reserves during the Korean War. He was a member of the China Marine Association, the 1st Marine Division Association and the Paul E. Boyd Chapter #579 of the Marine Corps League in Kenner, where he served as Commandant from 2003-2005, and was Marine of the Year 2012. Joe was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3267 and American Legion Post 267. A lifelong lumberman, who was past president of Donegan Lumber Co., Joe served for many years until his death as president of Wood Unlimited, an association of family-owned lumber companies. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus of St. Philip Neri Parish in Kenner and St. Agnes Parish in Jefferson. Members of the Paul E. Boyd Chapter of the Marine Corps League, of the Knights of Columbus of St. Philip Neri Parish, of Wood Unlimited, the VFW Post 3267, American Legion Post 267, and employees of Lumber Products, Inc. are invited to pay their respects at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Blvd., Metairie, La., on Saturday January 24, 2015 visitation starting at 1pm with Service starting at 3pm.
