JOSEPH LANSING SMITH SR. Joseph Lansing Smith, Sr., 88, of Wilmington passed away Friday, October 3, 2014 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Lance was born in Wilmington on December 6, 1925 to the late Lansing Burrows Smith and Nettie Jane Fleming Smith of Wrightsville Sound. Growing up on Summer Rest Road as well as living there off and on over the years, Lance's spirit and soul were deeply rooted in coastal waters. He was at his happiest when gill netting spots, shrimping, mullet seining, oystering, clamming or crabbing the Intercostal Waterway and its marshes or fishing for Blues and Spanish mackerel in a Simmons Sea Skiff off Wrightsville Beach. Lance graduated from New Hanover High School in 1943, attended VMI for one year before joining the Army Air Corp. in 1944, and graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1948 to begin a long career in Wilmington as a CPA before retiring in 1984. In the early sixties, Lance, John C. Drewry and three other partners formed the Lumina Corporation and gave new life to a deteriorating Lumina Pavilion with fresh paint and a new bar called the Upper Deck, both of which are deeply ingrained in Wrightsville Beach lore. In the mid-eighties, Lance, along with his beloved nephew Wright Holman and three sons, established Dockside Restaurant and Marina, which was sold in 2006. Lance is survived by older sister Nancy Smith Rose; wife Margret E. Smith; former wife Virginia G. Smith, mother of his three sons: Joseph L. Smith, Jr. (Lance, Jr.) and wife Gale; Burrows G. Smith and wife Pam; Andrew Fleming Smith and wife Jennifer; grandchildren Wyatt L. Smith and Claire L. Smith. A visitation will be Wednesday, October 8, 7-8 pm, at Andrews Mortuary, Market Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1406 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401 or a charity of your choice. Not sure what to say?

Think of T-Bone, Sig, and Matthew each time I go to WB. Many fun and funny memories.

Lance Sr. still has an influence in my life today, both in business and personally. Remember "Bosses Day" and oyster roast. His corn fritters and spot. Feeding my family with fish as a single mom. His sons and nephew following his footsteps. Lots of love there.

To the Smith Family, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Lance Sr. He was a wonderful man with a kind heart. Cherish the memories as he will live in your hearts forever.Sincerely, Tammy (Harvey)

Burrows & Pam ... Barbara and I are so sorry for your loss. Parents set our lives on their trajectories and when we lose them in the inevitable course of life it leaves a hole that is tough to fill. Our prayers and best wishes are with you as you remember the remarkable man Burrows' dad was and his legacy. Although we did not meet him we can see his imprint all around us in Wilmington. He truly made this a better place to live and work for all of us.

Andrew, Jennifer and Family - You're in our hearts and prayers. Much love,
Virginia, Patrick, Abigail, Ben & Emerson Phelps

Lance, Burrows, and Andrew,
The Bulluck family sends its sympathy and prayers. Your Dad and mom provided a great base for your lives. Lance loved you all more than life itself. Our family has many wonderful memories of him and many long lasting stories. We will remember his laughter and smiles. He was a good friend and partner.

The Bullucks

We had so many great times together. Such a generous, kind human being. His accomplishments and legacy lives on! My heart goes out to the Smith family for your loss, for all our loss! What a great man! He will always be with us.

To all of Lance's family, I am sorry to hear about his passing. I well remember the times George and he did things together, especially producing the movie "The Fix". George thought the world of Lance and I have fond memories of cookouts at his place near Wrightsville Beach. Just know you are all in my prayers.
