My condolences, of course! Joe was one of the nicest guy's that I had the pleasure to meet and work with when I was working at NUWC and was president of the Newport Navy League Council! Always a pleasure to meet and associate with Barbara, too! Together they were a super team. I'll remember them both, always as friends forever!

Dear Barbara and family,
It has now been 3 years since Joe's passing. We recall the solemnity of that day, the honors and ceremony, the regret that he is no longer with us. He was a Classmate , good friend, consummate professional, and patriot. He rests among other heroes and is remembered each day. More than that he was an example of what it means to be a Naval Officer.
Rest in peace, Joe.

Joe was one of the finest officers that I had the privilege of meeting and working with while I was an active Navy League members in Newport RI. With his wife, Barbara, they were also undoubtedly loved by anyone who had the pleasure of attending one or more of the frequent social activities hosted at the Naval War College where Joe was the President, and Barbara the First Lady! I think of them often, especially when visiting the Newport area.

Myself and CWO French were the Deception detachment from FDGP, Coronado, CA. The CVN-65 World Cruise was a career base for me. I was pinned with my ESWS by ADM Strasser as a young OS1. When my first son was born on 01 Jan 90, he personally congratulated me and sent a note to my wife. He was definitely an Officer and a Gentleman. I will remember him fondly.

Admiral ( and Phd!) Joe Strasser was the kind of man who was not only respected for his station and his many abilities, but loved for his personality, helpfulness and caring for so many people that he interacted with and related to! I was fortunate to have been associated with him and his lovely wife Barbara when I was working in Newport at the Undersea Warfare Center and sharing Navy League membership both when he was Naval War College President, and later a Navy League member of the Newport Council. His kind of friendship is one that is never forgotten as it was a lifetime highlight. My condolences again to Barbara and their family!

My deepest sympathies to Barbara and family on this saddest of occasions. I was fortunate to associate with Joe thru the Newport Council of the Navy League. Thought the world of he and Barbara then and still do! To me, Joe was the poster person for the expression "An Officer and Gentleman" I will always remember him as an icon of a Navy Admiral, and of he and Barbara as a classic and delightful team. God has a special place for him which he is rightly entitled to! God love you and bless you all.

Yesterday Joe's name came up un my mind, so I googled him and got this shocking news. He was a wonderful person and a good friend during the time in Kings Park West.
The memory: When I was working at NDU, Joe and some other Naval officers came into the building where I was. The moment he saw me, he left his group and came over to give me a big hug, which was possibly surprising from a "dignified" flag officer. That is my last memory of him , but a great one!

Admiral Strasser was on of the most dignified flag officers that I encountered during my twenty year Navy career. As a Petty Officer Second Class, while stationed at the Naval War College as a staff member (March 1988-March 1991), I had the honor of being awarded a letter of commendation (LOC) from the Admiral in October 1990 (picture attached). That LOC garnered me one additional point toward advancement on the following enlisted advancement testing cycle. As a result, I was advanced to Petty Office First Class by one point. It was that LOC that put me over the top. I was, and am grateful for that award. Fair winds and following seas shipmate. Thank you for your very dignified service. We have the watch.

Respectfully,

I worked for Commander Joe Strasser when I was a young Lieutenant and he was a leader at the legendary OP-603, the strategic concepts branch, on the Navy staff in 1981. He was among the very best leaders and mentors I ever had, and I cherish my memories of his intellectual firepower, endless good humor, and sincere servant leadership. He guided me to The Fletcher School and touched my career in countless ways. I look forward to seeing him again across that distant sea we all must one day sail. Godspeed and open water to Admiral Joe.Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret)

Dear Barbara and family:
Sandie and I are deeply saddened by Joe's passing and appreciate the deep loss that you are experiencing.
Joe leaves behind many legacies, but none can surpass his role as a loving husband and father.
Our paths crossed many times from plebe year at USNA to the 55th reunion last fall. All of his 22nd Company classmates take great pride in his rise to high rank and the many prestigious positions in which he performed so well. He was the consummate professional. He was also the best of friends. We will miss him dearly, as will the USNA, the Navy, and the nation.

Joe was a loving Dad when Mary and Margot roomed together at Scranton and, of course, when he was at the helm at Penn State. While there, he made sure that the Commission for Women became an active voice for so many of us.

To the Strasser Family, I worked for Admiral Strasser at the Naval War College the entire tenure as President, My Father was an instructor at the War College and taught ADM Strasser back in the 1970s. His stellar reputation was evident both as student then as President.
