Juanita Jenkins Obituary

Juanita Jenkins LUBBOCK- Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Juanita Jenkins, 93 of Lubbock at 2:00 p.m., Friday May 18, 2012 at Calvary Baptist Church with burial following in Resthaven Memorial Park. To view Juanita's memorial page visit www.memorialdesigners.net. Juanita was born July 25, 1918 to the late Robert and Lala Harbert in Corinth (Denton County) Texas. When Juanita was a young lady, the family moved to Jones County, Texas so that her father could be a share-cropper. Her dad took all of the material possessions by covered wagon, while the rest of the family was taken by her uncle in his Model A. At the age of 15, her father and brother, Howard, were killed in a car accident. She suffered a severe back injury, but was able to graduate from Hamlin High School in 1938. Soon after graduation, she began working for SW Bell Telephone, while her one and only love, John Jenkins worked for Acme Lumber. On September 6, 1940, they married and moved to Hobbs, N.M. In 1943, John began serving in the US Army Air Corps and survived 35 missions in Germany during WWII. After being honorably discharged in 1945, they moved to Sundown and began operating Sundown Drug Store. John surrendered to the ministry in 1954 and began his first pastorate at Hodges Baptist Church. Juanita then became the ultimate preacher's wife for churches in Woodrow (Lubbock Cooper), Flagstaff, Spur, Lorenzo, Lockney and Morton. She was the State WMU (Women's Missionary Union) director for the State of Arizona from 1962-1963. She was also the Camp Director for Girls Auxiliary at South Plains Baptist Assembly for many years in the 1970's. Upon retirement in 1985, she and John moved to Lubbock and became members of Calvary Baptist Church. John died in 1991. Juanita enjoyed being with her lunch-bunch friends and participating in many senior activities at Calvary Baptist Church. She is survived by three children, Dr. Jim Jenkins and wife Toni, Jarrell Jenkins and wife Lynnda and Jana Jenkins; six grandchildren, Dr. Doug Jenkins, Brad Jenkins, Jeff Jenkins, Kristie Franklin, Lance Lokey and Kasie Jenkins; and nine great-grandchildren, Jake Jenkins, Josh Jenkins, Ashley Jenkins, Katelyn Jenkins, Jack Jenkins, Cody Jenkins, Kaleb McNeese, Charley Ann McNeese and Campbell Franklin. Juanita was preceded in death by her six siblings, Otis Harbert, Leona Carter, Grace Hart, Marguerite Richardson, Howard Harbert and Bill Harbert. The family would like to thank Dr Richard Henderson, Dr. Syamala Chekuru and staff at Covenant Rehabilitation Hospital, Carillon Rehabilitation, Serendipity Suites, Interim Health/Hospice, her Sunday school class at Calvary Baptist Church, Sandy West and Ella Mae Gentry. Memorials are suggested to Calvary Baptist Church Mission Fund or a charity of your choice.

Juanita - I miss you so much. You just had a birthday again in July. I still love the book you wrote about your life. I am so appreciative of your testimony - you and John both - you always shared about your love for the Lord and His love for us. I am happy I am a christian and I have no doubts that someday probably not too far off - I will see you in heaven - and we will forever - be together thru the eternity of eternities! Worshipping God together in the
Throne Room of heaven. Love - Johncie

Jana and family, I have lived next door to your mom and dad since they first moved here. I really got closer to Juanita after John passed, and what a wonderful friend and neighbor she was to me. She will be missed terribly by all who were blessed to know her. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
