Toronto - Julieta Olga Fernandes Alves passed away suddenly in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on her 85th birthday.

She was born to Maria Luisa and Jose Fernandes Belo on Sept. 22, 1922 in Santa Cruz, Madeira Island, Portugal. She was the youngest of eight children.

Julieta was married to Manuel Alves of Machico, Madeira Island, Portugal, on June 11, 1943. She was predeceased by her husband Manuel, and her grandson, Jules Xavier Escorcio-Schneider of Mystic, as well as five brothers and two sisters.

She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Lisa Leva of Toronto, Ontario, and Ana Maria Schneider and her husband, Jeffrey, of Mystic; grandson, Robert Stacy Leva and his wife, Sara Middleton-Trimm Leva; great-grandchildren, Myles Xavier Leva and Elyse Mackenzie Leva; as well as very special nieces, Amandia Labriola, Elinor Curri, and cousins Vasco Rodrigues and Augusta de Jesus.

Julieta was known as a good friend to many as she was fiercely loyal and championed many people and causes both in Toronto and Madeira. Julieta and her husband were founding members and trustees of their church, and were very active in their spiritual community. As an avid gardener, Julieta won several residential environmental beautification awards from the City of Toronto.

There will be a graveside service at the Elm Grove Cemetery, Rte. 27, Mystic, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jules Xavier Escorcio-Schneider Fund @ Pine Point School, Barnes Road, Stonington, CT 06378 or American Heart Assoc. of Connecticut, P.O. Box 5022, Wallingford, CT 06492.

Byles Memorial, 99 Huntington St., New London, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

We were so sorry to read of the loss of your mother. My mother passed away last year and I miss her everyday. We think of you often and the kindness you extended us when we were living at Mystic River Square. Will always wonder if we are related.
