Columbus, Georgia- SGM (Ret) Karl H. Conway, age 63, resident of Columbus, died on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Columbus Regional Medical Center. Graveside services are scheduled at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, 11 a.m. with Father Frank Patterson officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, July 2, 2012 from 5-7 p.m.
Mr. Conway, son of the late Robert John Conway and Klara Christel Conway, was born August 1, 1948 in Frauenaurach, Germany. He was Catholic by faith and retired from the U.S. Army where he served his country honorably for over 26 years. During his distinguished military career, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (w/3 OLC); Army Commendation Medal (w/one OLC); the Army Achievement Medal; and Vietnam Service Medal. SGM Conway served two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Germany, and one tour in Korea. After retiring from the military, he worked for a private contractor at Fort Benning and then began a new career with the U.S. Postal Service and retired with many years of faithful service.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother. SGM Conway is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda Conway of Columbus; two daughters, Ann Marie Binion of Hattiesburg, MS and Regina A. Conway of Austin, TX; two sisters, Victoria DeMatos of South Plainfield, NJ and Heidi Conway, also of South Plainfield, NJ; three brothers, Robert Conway, James Conway, and Mark Conway, all of Union, NJ; three grandsons, Ryan Binion, Michael Binion, and Alex Binion; other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society at www.acscan.org.
