Katharine Sherrer Obituary

Katharine Avery
Sherrer
April 29, 1928-
May 20, 2011
Columbus, GA- Katharine Avery Sherrer, 83, of Columbus, Georgia died suddenly at her daughter Kathy's home in Powder Springs, Georgia May 20, 2011. Dr. Jimmy Elder, Pastor of First Baptist Church Columbus, Georgia, will be officiating funeral services Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home chapel. Dr. Elder will be officiating graveside services Monday, May 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. CST at Oak Hill Cemetery, Prattville, Alabama.
Mrs. Sherrer has been a resident of Columbus since 2000. She moved here after residing in North Augusta, South Carolina, for 25 years. She was born in Prattville, Alabama, and was the daughter of the late Sherrer E. and Kate (Poole) Avery. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Dr. Jack D. Sherrer, Sr., and her three brothers.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Jack D. Sherrer, Jr. (and wife Brenda) of Columbus; her daughter, Kathy S. Welch (and husband Phillip) of Powder Springs, Georgia; and her daughter, Cynthia S. Taylor (and husband Dr. Kenneth L. Taylor) of Kathleen, Georgia; also nine grandchildren: Jack III, Avery, James and Stuart Sherrer of Columbus, Katie Colson and Rachel Welch of Powder Springs, Georgia, and Jane, Meg, and Dan Taylor of Kathleen, Georgia.
Mrs. Sherrer was currently a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus and the Joy Sunday School class. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (George Walton Chapter), Columbus, and the Muscogee Genealogical Society. She was a former member of Mimosa Garden Club, Columbus, Gala Quilters of Columbus/Phenix City, Alabama, Pieceful Hearts Quilters in North Augusta, South Carolina (a charter member), and the Quilters of South Carolina. She received many blue ribbons for her quilts and clothing over the years at county fairs. On three different occasions she won Best of Show for her sewing and quilting. She was also a charter member of Founding Families of South Carolina, and much of her adult life was spent in researching her family history. She was an active volunteer at the House of Time for over four years - teaching sewing and quilting, and was recently active with the First Baptist Church Quilt Ministry.
Mrs. Sherrer graduated from Autauga County High School in Prattville, Alabama in 1946 and attended Judson College, Marion, Alabama, for three years before marrying her high school sweetheart in 1949. She transferred that year to Auburn University where she completed her education with a B.S. in Home Economics in 1951. She had been involved in many activities through the years: secretary, substitute teacher, dental assistant, volunteer with Red Cross, and Sunday School teacher.
She was a wonderful Christian wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Under her senior picture in the high school yearbook was the quote: "A Friend to All She Ever Knew", which she endeavored to be all her life.
