Katherine Holland Obituary

Katherine "Katty" Miller Holland COLUMBIA - Katherine "Katty" Miller Holland peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, February 2, 2018, at the age of 95. Katty will always be remembered as a devoted wife and loving mother to her six children. Born on January 16, 1923 to Marion Roddey Miller and Samuel Livingston Miller, Katty was the youngest of four girls living on Green Street in Columbia, S.C. She graduated from Columbia High School and then the University of South Carolina. Soon after, she married the love of her life, Jimmy Holland. They settled in Greenville, S.C. where they raised their family. She taught school at Grove Elementary and in 1979 was awarded Teacher of the Year. Once she retired she returned to her hometown of Columbia. She attended Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and served on the Altar Guild there. Gardening was a lifelong hobby and she was a member of the Dianthus Garden Club for many years. Katty had a passion for genealogy and her studies led her to join the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also loved to read and was a member of The Club book club. One of her favorite hobbies was the game of bridge. She taught all of her children to play and there was always a game of bridge in progress. As an educator, Katty always encouraged learning and she was quite proud of the fact that all six of her children graduated from USC. Her later years in life were spent at Still Hopes Episcopal Home where some of her dearest friends from childhood also lived. Katty is predeceased by her husband, James "Jimmy" Harold Holland: son, John Roddey Holland; and daughter, Elizabeth "Liz" Holland Jones. She is survived by her sons, James Harold Holland, Jr. (Lauren) and Gill Wylie Holland (Debbie); daughters, Katherine Holland Doty (Gordon) and Rebecca Holland Sanders (Barry); son-in-law, John Mark Jones; grandsons, Christopher, Gill and Henry Holland, and Jack Sanders; granddaughters Mary Bowie and Bennett Holland, Katty and Kelsey Jones, and Alex Sanders. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2018 at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. There will be a private burial in the First Presbyterian Churchyard preceding the service. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in Guignard Mansion at Still Hopes. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting with arrangements. The family will be forever grateful to the staff of Still Hopes for the excellent care they gave to Katty. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, One Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169. Please sign the online guestbook at www.dunbarfunerals.com.
