KENNETH BURROWS Obituary

BURROWS--Kenneth David, died in his sleep on Decem- ber 14 at the age of 82 after battling Parkinson's disease and lung complications. Ken served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 1960 to 1968. After obtaining a BA from Brown University in 1967, Ken attended Fordham Law School, obtained his JD in 1970, and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1971 and to the Connecticut Bar in 1993. He practiced family law in New York City for over 50 years and was a member of the New York City Bar Association, the Connecticut Bar Association, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and numerous other committees and associations. Known for his positive spin on life and his joie-de-vivre, Ken lived to make his wife Erica laugh and to coax smiles from everyone around him. With his love for language and the arts, Ken was a renaissance man who enjoyed the theater, concerts and museums. A lover of all things Parisian, Ken was fluent in French and enjoyed traveling worldwide with Erica. He was an avid aviator and a sailor and made the most of sky, sea and all in between. Cherished husband to Erica Mann Jong, adored stepfather to Molly Jong-Fast and Samantha Richman. Loving grandfather to Max, Darwin, Beatrice and Francesca. Brother to Jonathan Burrows and the late Patricia Burrows. Brother-in-law to Annie Burrows, Milt Wolfson, Suzanna Daou, Claudia Oberweger-Frank and Yitzchak Frank. Nephew to Roberta Wells, cousin to Linda Sirow and Dr. Harold Koplewicz, Richard and Lynn Sirow, Daniel and Joanne Sirow. Beloved friend to many. His charm, positive humor and wit will be sorely missed and his stories and passion will live on for generations. A service will be held at Frank E. Campbell - The Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Ave., at 81st Street, New York, NY 10028, at 2:30pm on Friday, December 15th.

Ken was my mentor hiring me right after my clerkship as his associate. He taught me to think like a lawyer, to write like a liberal arts educated student and to represent clients from the entertainment and literary worlds and those going through divorce. He was also my friend. He was a true intellectual: a reader, an historian, a fluent French speaker and lover of music, art, theater and the world. I am so lucky to have been his associate and friend

Dear Erica and Molly, and all of Ken´s extended family,

Ken was the beloved friend of and devoted and wise legal advisor to my late husband, Robert K. Massie. One of our first dates was at a feminist Seder at Erica and Ken´s.

My three children, Christopher, Sophia, and Nora, and I, send you love. May his memory be for a blessing.

As ever,
Deborah (Karl)

More than sixty years ago, Ken was a regular at our lunchtable at Brown, where everyone enjoyed his company. For decades later, he was minimally my lawyer. When a feature about his widow at home appeared in the NYT recently, I told him that the pictures made him look less UES, where he always lived, than downtown Manhattan, where I've resided.
Nobody among us could read a book faster. His critical judgments I respected. RK
